FL1 round-up: Strong second half sees Blues over the line

May 16, 2018

For the second game in succession Newtown Blues had to overcome a half time deficit to preserve their winning start as they needed a strong second half display to defeat Clan na Gael on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-7.

The game in Newfoundwell saw the Clans edge a closely contested first half with a goal from Billy Smith sending them in at the break with a 1-4 to 0-5 lead.

However, the Blues fought their way back into the game as points from Ross Nally and Robert Carr helped them take control. Scorers from Leo Martin and Mark McGeown kept the Clans in touch but the home side held out to win by two.

A late goal from Brendan Neacy saw Mattock Rangers remain in second place in the table as the Collon men secured a dramatic 1- 9 to 0-11 win at home to St Brides.

The Knockbridge side looked to be on course for their second win of the season when they led by two points with time almost up. However, they were unable to see the game out as Neacy had the final say.

Mattock had been leading by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break and the result, combined with the Geraldines win over Gaels, means that the Brides are now bottom of the table. Dreadnots remain level with Mattock in second place after they continued their good run of results with a 1-17 to 2-10 win at home to St Marys.

The Clogherhead side had slightly the better of things in the first half with James Califf and Pepe Smith on target but the Marys struck the first goal of the game through Jamie Rooney just before the break to cut the gap to 0-11 to 1-6.

It was looking good for the Marys when Kian Moran added a second goal from a penalty to put the visitors ahead just after the restart. However, the Dreadnots picked up the pace from that stage and goal from Anthony Williams at the end of the third quarter sent them on their way to victory.

Nh Mairtin moved into the top half of the table with a 3-11 to 1-11 victory over St Patricks at Lordship.

A goal from JP Rooney helped the visitors recover from a slow start before an Aidan McCann goal restored the Pat's advantage. However, two quick-fire goals from Stephen Campbell and Eoghan Callaghan in the dying moments of the first half saw the Jocks lead by 3-3 to 1-6 at half time.

The Mairtins continued to hold the advantage in the second half with the help of points from Sam Mulroy and they held out for victory despite Paddy Keenan kicking three points for the hosts.

Sean O'Mahonys ended their losing sequence as 1-11 to 1-10 win over Cooley Kickhams saw them move on to six points in the table.

A late goal from Stephen Kilcoyne proved decisive in the game at the Point Road where the home side were leading by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Cooley hit back in the second half and looked to be on course for their second win in four days when a Gerry Malone goal put them ahead in the closing stages. However, Mackin struck back almost immediately to give his side victory.

Geraldines also picked up a vital victory when they defeated Dundalk Gaels by 1-10 to 0-8 at The Ramparts to record their first win of the season.

A goal Glen Trainor in the first half put the Gers in a strong position as they led by 1-8 to 0-5 despite playing into the wind.

The Gers added jus two points to their tally in the second half but it was enough to secure victory over a Gaels side who had Eanna McArdle and Gerard McSorley among their scorers.
