St. Kevin's Cian Callan

St Kevins became the first team in Louth to register a league victory in 2018 when they defeated St Nicholas by 4-19 to 1-6 at Darver on Friday night with Cian Callan the star of the show as he helped himself to a hat-trick.

All three goals came in the first half that ended with the Philipstown men leading by 3-7 to 0-2.

Philip Kirwan pulled a goal back for the Nicks in the secodn half but the Kevins were not to be denied and they completed the comfortable win when Andrew Campbell scored his side's fourth goal of the night.

John Mitchels made an impressive start to the new season when they came away from Dowdallshill with a 1-18 to 1-4 win.

Despite playing against the breeze in the first half, the Mitchels went in leading by 1-4 to 0-2 with Trevor Matthews scoring the goal for the visitors. Kevin Kirk replied for the Hill to keep them in the game.

However, the second half saw the Mitchels pull away as scores from Kevin Gallagher and Robbie Coyle completed the win.

Westerns also made a winning start to the new season when they scored a 1-8 to 0-8 win away to Stabannon Parnells.

The only goal of the game arrived in first half injury time from Conor Kerr to help the Westerns lead by 1-5 to 0-3 at half time.

Aonghus Giggins, who finished with six points, led the revival for Stabannon but the Westerns held out as points from Tommy Durnin saw them secure the victory.

Colin Murphy was scoring hero for Lannleire as he kicked all their points in a hard-fought 0-10 to 0-5 win over Young Irelands.

Murphy was in fine form from the opening whistle and his points ensured the Dunleer men were leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break with Jordan O'Donoghue's scores keeping the Young Irelands in touch.

However, Lannleire were the better side in the second half and they went on to claim a deserved five-point victory.

Wolfe Tones marked their return to Division 3 football with a comfortable 3-14 to 1-5 win over Cuchulainn Gaels.

Darren Weldon and Niall Smith found the net in the first half to send their side in leading by 2-9 to 0-2.

The Omeath side improved in the second half and saw Cian McDonald hit the net but it was never going to be enough as the Tones continued to dominate and a third goal from Jamie McCormack sealed their win.
