The Late John Joe O'Reilly There was a deep sadness in Longford town recently as news of death of John Joseph O'Reilly, 1 Main St, Longford, spread Mr O'Reilly passed away on Monday, March 31 last. A native of Clonguish, John Joe was the owner of long established pub, John Joe O'Reilly's which is located in the heart of Longford town. Famously known as the Sportman's Bar, the premises is located on Longford's main commercial street and the bar famously featured its distinctive page one advertisement on the front of the Longford Leader for fifty years. The Corner House, as it would be known to older readers, has been a favourite GAA House over the years. It's also one of the few bars in Ireland where you can still buy a Kapp & Peterson pipe. John Joe served his time in the pub business in Mooney's in Dublin which operated a brisk trade at the time. When he moved to Longford, he owned one of the busiest pubs in the Midlands. A former active member of the Longford Vintner's Association, John Joe was regarded by his fellow publicans as being one of the best publicans in the area. He was a very astute businessman and one of the top publicans in the country. He ran a hugely successful business and a good pub trade. John Joe himself was a celebrated footballer with both his native Clonguish and also the Longford County team. After his playing days, he went on to a long and fruitful career as a GAA administrator both at county and Leinster level. His passing is deeply regretted by his loving wife, Hilda; son, Cathal; daughter, Niamh; son-in-law, Mel; granddaughters, Rosie and Suzanne; sisters, Annie (Donegan) and Eileen (Duke); nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His remains were brought to St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford with burial to Ballymacormack Cemetery after Mass of the Resurrection. The management and staff of the Longford Leader wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Mr O'Reilly's family, relatives and friends on their sad loss. May he rest in peace.
