McGarahan, Hugh

December 21, 2007
The Late Hugh McGarahan There was widespread sorrow in his native Carrigallen at the death of Mr Hugh McGarahan which has occurred at his residence, Caloughs. Hugh was son of the late Pat and Ellie McGarahan and a member of a long established farming family in the area. He succumbed peacefully to the illness, he manfully fought over recent years. An outgoing friendly person, he was a keen supporter of the local GAA club and he showed his commitment and also his sense of fun when he stood for Lord Mayor in a major fundraising for the club a few years ago. He also donated land to the Carrigallen GAA for the development of their facilities. He followed his late uncle John (a founding member) in his life-long involvement in Carrigallen Ploughing Association. The removal was very large and a guard of honour was formed by the local GAA Ploughing Association and members of the public from his home with a Garda escort to St Mary's Church. The funeral Mass was concelebrated by Very Revd Denis Murray PP and Rev Sean McTiernan, Kiltegan Father and life long friend of Hugh's. His nephews from England did the readings. Hugh was predeceased by his brothers John Patrick, Matt Christie & Christie and sister Alice. He is survived by his wife Frances, sons Noel, Calloughs; Garda Peter, Monaghan Garda Station and sister Lena (Billy) Corr, England. We pay tribute to a great family man and a good neighbour and offer sincere sympathy to his family and friends. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Longford Leader 21 December 2007
