Dalton, Andy

March 09, 2007
The late Andy Dalton Ballinalee and the surrounding parishes are in mourning once again following the unexpected death of former Co Councillor Mr Andy Dalton of Edderland. Mr Dalton passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday March 2, 2007. The late Mr Dalton represented the Ballinalee area for a number of years as a Fine Gael member of Longford Co Council, and at the time of his death, he was a Peace Commissioner. A tradesman by profession and indeed a very talented builder, carpenter and craftsman, much of his great work can be seen throughout the county. His father and grandfather were instrumental in building many of the churches around the county, including the church spire in Ardagh. Mr Dalton enjoyed working with many of the voluntary organisations in his area and was noted for always trying to make time for them. He also had very close associations with the GAA, being a keen former footballer with Sean Connolly's football club and of course, his nephew Seamus Kiernan is a former county board secretary. Senator James Bannon said he was deeply saddened by the unexpected death of his friend and colleague. "It was with great acute sadness that I learned of Andy's sudden passing, he was an absolute gentleman and someone with whom I had served next to for many years," he said. "He will be sorely missed by his community who have now lost a faithful friend and a very good neighbour." Senator Bannon went on to say that former Cllr Dalton was a very good councillor and extremely committed to his constituents. "I remember so many of the good and valuable propositions he put forward to further the safety and of course the development of the Ballinalee area." The late Mr Dalton was very involved with the annual Clonfin commemoration ceremonies and only as late as February 4th, 2007, took part in the 2007 occasion by raising the tricolour on the special occasion. PRedeceased by his brother Michael and sister Eileen some years ago, Andy will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him but more so by his loving sisters, Elizabeth and Teresa Kiernan (Drimeel); his nephew Seamus Kiernan; niece Mary Flood and family and his own extended family, friends and neighbours. His remains were brought too the Holy Trinity Church, Ballinalee with burial to St Emer's Cemetery after Mass of the Resurrection. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Longford Leader 09 March 2007
