Murtagh, Matt

February 20, 2005
The Late Matt Murtagh When the news of Aughnacliffe man Matt Murtagh's untimely death filtered through, sports fans throughout the county were stunned at his passing. Longford Town and Colmcille supporters, players and officials were both particularly affected as Matt was a well known stalwart for both clubs. Matt was one of Longford Towns greatest fans, a person who was a Longford Town supporter with a difference. Years ago when the pitch at Flancare Park was in need of repair, Matt came along with his loy and helpers and showed all how to work. One the winter nights at Flancare, or in any ground in the country, he had the flask and the hot drop to warm up any fellow supporter. Always with a friendly word, Matt had a great knowledge of the game and his post match views were always taken as an accurate view of proceedings. He along with his friend, Pat Devine were always first on the bus for away trips (including the UEFA Cup in Vaduz) and he will be sorely missed by all his travelling companions. Some years ago, he hosted a Longford Town v Shamrock Rovers friendly at the Rock in Aughnacliffe and he was so proud to have the famous Hoops at the North of the County. He was also instrumental in the formation of the thriving North Longford Supporters Club with whom he helped with fundraising. He helped out the club on a weekly basis selling the weekly lotto and other fundraisers. But Matt Murtagh was not simply a soccer fan. He was an exceptional gaelic footballer in his early years, wearing the county and the Colmcille club jersey with distinction. One of Longford's outstanding sporting dynasties, the Murtaghs have been particularly involved with and supportive of gaelic games, soccer and golf. And none of the family more so than Matt, a most pleasant, friendly and enthusiastic presence at countless disciplines and venues. Sincere sympathies are expressed to his sorrowing wife Ita, and with all the Murtagh family. Courtesy of the Longford Leader 11th February 2005
