Clonguish succeed at second attempt
October 06, 2003
Clonguish........0-11
Ballymahon.......1-1
Clonguish regained the Longford senior football crown after a 22-year absence when they recorded a comfortable victory over holders Ballymahon in a wet and wind-swept replay at Pearse Park on Sunday, October 5.
As the scoreline would suggest, the Newtownforbes side were far superior, even though Ballymahon briefly led thanks to a Mark O'Connor goal in the 20th minute. That left the champions 1-0 to 0-2 in front, but Clonguish replied with unanswered points from Paddy Dowd (two), Paul Barden and Enda Barden to lead by 0-6 to 1-0 at the interval.
Clonguish completely dominated the second half, restricting their opponents to just one further score - a pointed free from Frankie Dolan. Clonguish's second half scores were accounted for by Enda Barden, Paddy Dowd and corner forward Joe O'Brien who notched two points from play.
