Longford......1-11 Kerry...............1-6 The current well-being of Longford underage football was once again in evidence at Nenagh on Saturday, March 22 when the midlanders overcame Kerry to qualify for the All-Ireland Vocational Schools football final. The win means that Longford are just 60 minutes away from completing a unique double, having already captured the All-Ireland 'B' title. With Brian Kavanagh in fine form from placed balls, they had opened up a 0-4 to 0-0 lead after 18 minutes. PJ Gorman and Jersey Houlihan replied for the Kingdom, but Longford finished the half strongly with points from Brian McElvanney, Padraig Berry and Kavanagh giving them a 0-7 to 0-3 interval advantage. Kerry improved substantially on the restart with a Houlihan goal levelling proceedings in the 50th minute. When the same player followed up with the lead point four minutes later, it looked as though the Kingdom would go on to claim victory. But Longford restored parity through Kavanagh a minute later before substitute Eddie Madden clinched victory with a late goal. Tweet
