The Late Peetie McWade

On Saturday June 25th 2011 a beloved Drumlish character, Peetie McWade passed to his eternal reward following a long illness bravely borne.

Husband to Lily and father to Elizabeth and Pete, Peetie was well known in the Drumlish community for his love of gaelic football and in particular his love of Fr. Manning Gaels.

It was a love that his own father, Drumlish man Jimmy McWade, passed on to him. Jimmy had played with Ballinamuck and Drumlish in the 1920s and 1930s.

Once Peetie started playing football he was reluctant to stop and during his years with Drumlish Eire Og he won three county championships (1951, 1953 and 1955) and he was also the captain of the team that won three Feis cups in a row.

Such was his love of football that one of the highlights of Peetie's life was when Fr. Manning Gaels brought home the Connolly Cup in 1996. It was with great pride that he told how one of the players on the winning team was none other than son Pete.

This love of football wasn't exclusive of the maroon and gold of Fr. manning Gaels. It also extended to the blue and yellow of Longford. Peetie's name was known far and wide for travelling to football games all over Ireland supporting his beloved Longford.

When he wasn't on the pitch or by the sideline, Peetie was hard at work on his JCB in his role with Longford County Council. His dedication to sport was matched by his dedication to his job and he was well known amongst his colleagues for never missing a day's work or being late to work.

In his personal life, Peetie McWade was loved for his wit and his ability to crack a joke. His convivial nature was matched with a curiosity for automobiles that saw him tinkering away at his car.

He will also be well remembered for his contribution towards other areas of Drumlish society including his involvement with the Marquee of Drumlish where he could often be seen handling tickets or stewarding.

Overall Peetie McWade will be known for his determined yet loving personality. Popular by nature, Peetie will be strongly missed throughout the Drumlish community and beyond.

Peetie McWade of Mill Road, Drumlish, passed to his eternal reward on June 25th 2011 last at home in the loving care of his family.

Beloved husband of Lily, loving father of Pete and Elizabeth (Bracken); he is sadly missed by his wife and family, brother Paddy (Mulingar), sister Kathleen (Greene, Teffia Park), son-in-law Brendan, grandchildren Ciaran and Eimear, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
