Deeply Regretted Death

Miss Lena Kiernan, Aughnacliffe who died at the Sunset Nursing Home, Longford on Wednesday 22nd September following a prolonged illness was born in June 1921. She was a member of an old established Colmcille family and was predeceased by her brothers Colm and James and her sister Bridie and is survived by her sister May Kiernan in Stradbally Co Laois. Following the death of her father and mother at an early age she served her time at the grocery, bar and hardware business at her uncles shop in Drumlish and was very popular and held in high regard by everyone. After some years she returned to the family home in Aughnacliffe. Like her brothers James and Colm she took a great interest in the GAA and for many decades she took charge of the footballs and washed the jerseys for the Colmcille club free of charge. The attendance at the funeral included former Colmcille county and Leinster Railway cup player Noel Dodd and his wife who travelled from Dublin. Her remains were received at Colmcille Church on Friday by Rev Fr Sean O'Dowd who celebrated the funeral Mass on Saturday 25th September and afterwards laid to rest in the family burial grounds in the adjoining cemetery. The obsequies were very well attended on both days. Deepest sympathy is tendered to her sorrowing sister May, relatives and friends. May her soul rest in peace.
