Longford SFC: Barden wins replay for Clonguish
September 28, 2009
Longford's Paul Barden
Paul Barden's pointed free four minutes into stoppage time secured a 13th Longford SFC title for Clonguish in yesterday's replayed final against Dromard at Pearse Park.
Clonguish..0-9
Dromard1-5
The game really only came to life in the final 10 minutes, which included five minutes of injury-time, when the class of the Barden brothers, David and Paul, finally began to tell.
Clonguish had been the better team, but it looked like they would be denied when they entered injury-time two points in arrears. But a point each from Ciaran Williams, David Barden and Paul Barden meant the Connolly Cup was destined for Newtownforbes once again.
There was an early talking point when Dromard's Francis McGee, who scored 1-7 in the drawn final, should have been awarded a penalty after he was hauled down in the area. But scores proved difficult to come by until those frenetic final 10 minutes.
Leading by two points, Clonguish suddenly found themselves trailing when substitute Ronan McEntire fisted a Dromard goal after Jamesie Martin's effort had come back off the post.
McGee then scored a long-range free to push Dromard two points clear, but Clonguish registered the last three points to take the title.
