Bracken, Michael

October 24, 2008
Former Killoe, Longford and New York footballer, Mickey was a well regarded player in his day. Friends likened him to the current Colmcille player, Declan C Reilly, given his gutsy nature despite a small stature. Mickey was left half back on the Killoe Young Emmets team that won the Longford senior football championship in 1960, the first winners of the Connolly Cup. He was a great supporter of the local GAA club, coaching underage teams in Killoe for a time. He also refereed at underage level during that period. Mickey was former secretary of Killoe GFC and was a vice-chairperson of Longford GAA Co Minor Board and was a selector with Co Minor team. At the time of his untimely passing he was honorary president of Killoe GFC. He also played a bit of soccer in the local leagues and five-a-side tournaments. In later years, his biggest hobby was bingo, and he and his late wife Kathleen attended bingo halls all over the region, enjoying a few wins. Mickey worked in Longford Weavers, before emigrating to America for a time. On his return he took up employment with Longford Textiles for a number of years. Husband of the late Kathleen (Clonee) and brother of the late Patrick; deeply regretted by his loving family, daughter Ann (Harte), sons Michael and Declan, sister Maura O'Brien, brothers John, James, Tony and Brendan and friend Anna. Removal of Mr Bracken's remains took place from Glennon's Funeral Home to St Oliver's Church, Cullyfad. His funeral mass takes place at 12pm with burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. - Longford Leader, 24th October 2008
