SENIOR HURLERS: Patrickswell maintained their perfect start to the Senior Hurling Championship with a comfortable win over South Liberties. It took Kevin O'Brien eight minutes to break the deadlock with the game's first point. One minute later, he burst through the South Liberties defence and notched a fine goal. John Flynn's point put the 'Well 1-2 to 0-0 ahead, before our opponents struck their first point. Their recovery was short-lived as John Flynn claimed a goal and Aaron Gillane added another point. At the 15 minute mark, Ciaran Carey's side led by 2-3 to 0-1. The middle of the first half was more even. Four Patrickswell points from Aaron Gillane (0-2), Josh Considine and Andrew Carroll were cancelled out by South Liberties. The 'Well finished the first half with a barrage of four points from John Flynn (0-2), Aaron Gillane and Jack Kelleher. The half-time score was 2-11 to 0-6.
South Liberties started the second half with two consecutive points before Aaron Gillane responded with a point. Their ninth point of the match was followed by another Kevin O'Brien goal to build a 3-12 to 0-9 advantage. Diarmaid Byrnes recorded his first point; however South Liberties replied with three unanswered points. There were fifteen minutes left on the clock and the 'Well were 3-13 to 0-12 ahead. As the rain fell heavily, Patrickswell closed out the match with a final purple patch of four points (Aaron Gillane 0-2, Diarmaid Byrnes and Kevin O'Brien). At the final whistle, the group leaders emerged as 3-17 to 0-12 winners. The next Championship match is on Friday August 16 at 7.30pm in the Gaelic Grounds against Kilmallock.
JUNIOR A HURLERS: The Junior A hurlers suffered their first City Championship defeat of the season against a tough Old Christians team. The Rathbane team made a rapid start and led by 1-1 to 0-0 after five minutes. Patrickswell settled into the match and responded with three points from Adam Carrig, Barry Foley and Gavin Carey. Old Christians stepped up their effort and tacked on three consecutive points to lead by 1-4 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. The 'Well increased their tempo and rallied with four straight points from Barry Foley (0-2), Gavin Carey and Cillian O'Reilly. The scores were tied at 0-7 to 1-4 with ten minutes left in the first half. Two Jonathan McMahon points were cancelled out by our opponents, before Owen McNamara, David Woulfe and Aaron Carmody gave Patrickswell a 0-12 to 1-6 advantage after 28 minutes. Unfortunately, Old Christians smashed two goals in a minute just before the half-time whistle and led by 3-6 to 0-12 at the break.
The second half began with a decisive goal from Old Christians that opened up a six point lead of 4-6 to 0-12. Darragh Ahern and Cian Enright scored fresh points, but these were matched in kind. When Old Christians bagged another two points, they were comfortably ahead at 4-10 to 0-14. The last five minutes were characterised by three Patrickswell points (Darragh Ahern 0-2 and Cian Enright) and another Old Christians point. The final score was a 4-11 to 0-17 defeat.
MINOR HURLERS: The Minor Hurlers visit Mungret on Wednesday August 14 at 6.30pm.
CLUB LOTTO: Lotto results for the week ending Tuesday August 6 were as follows. The numbers drawn were 5, 10, 25 and 32. The Bonus was 27. There was no jackpot winner.
