Murphy, Brendan and Mai

The late Brendan and Mai Murphy The deaths of Brendan and his wife Mai within a single week brought immense sadness and very deep shock to their immediate and extended families and to the wider community in the Fedamore and Crecora areas. Brendan was indeed a character of many parts. In the early days he loved at Castle Quarter in Fedamore where his father had the local forge and his mother ran a busy shop. A very active member of the community he was a dashing hurling forward winning a county championship medal with Bruff minors. He was chosen on the MH team for the 1941 championship but sadly due to WWII that competition was abandoned for a few years at that awful time of the emergency, so called. Brendan played junior with is native Fedamore winning East titles in 1947 and '48 where lady luck did not smile on that team who drew with the eventual county champions, Knockaderry and Rathkeale only to lose the replays by a single point in the successive years. Brendan was also very interested in army life and joined the LDF (later FCA) rising to the rank of captain and being a staunch recruiting officer for the movement in Fedamore where so many of us followed him taking courses at Sarsfield Barracks, Kilworth camp etc. Yes, he was a staunch and very active member of the community and it may also be recalled against the present discussions on wind power that Brendan erected a windmill in the back garden where strong winds from the Corcass helped drive its blades and produce valuable power during the war years. Much more could be written about this well-liked and very popular members of the community and who was featured in a lovely interview in the Fedamore News, the annual parish magazine, just a few short years ago. To all the family members we offer our deepest sympathy on the tragic passing of a loving Dad and Man. Suaimhneas Siorai da anamnacha uasail. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader 26 May 2007
