The late Tom Cregan - Somerset and Manister/Croom

July 11, 2006
The death occurred recently of Tom Cregan in Bristol and formerly of Manister and Croom after a short illness. As a young man he was a noted hurler and first came to prominence when he won a county minor hurling championship with Croom in 1939 (it was the 1936 final not finished until 1939). On Sept 1ST 1940 he was a member of the Limerick minor hurling team which won the All-Ireland beating Antrim in the final. Later the same day his late brother Peter won a senior All-Ireland beating Kilkenny in the final. The Cregan brothers hold a unique distinction in that they both had their All-Ireland wins on the same day playing in the same position(left-half back). Tom graduated to playing senior inter-county hurling with Limerick and won a National League medal in the 1946-47 season. He also won a Railway Cup medal playing with the victorious Munster team in 1949. With his club Croom he won county senior hurling championships in 1940 and 1941. He was an all-round player and figured in the backs and on other occasions led the forwards. In the mid 1950's Tom emigrated to England and settled in Salisbury. He later moved to London and in recent times Brent Knoll in Somerset where he continued to live until called to his eternal reward. In recent years he was a regular visitor to his native place where he met old friends and exchanged hurling lore. His late wife Ciss(nee Doyle) was a native of Knocklong Co. Limerick. He is survived by his son Thomas, daughter-in -law Janice, brothers Joe(Ballinacurra Gardens), Stephen and Willie (Croom), nieces, nephews and cousins. Go ndeanaigh Dia trocaire ar a anam uasal.
