Dick Stokes RIP The final chapter in the life of the great Dick Stokes came to a close when he passed away peacefully at his daughter's residence, Mary Flannery, in Nenagh. Dick Stokes, born in the town lands of Garavan, was arguably one of Limerick's greatest ever hurlers. At the tender age of 18, he played centrefield when Pallas were defeated by Feenagh in the 1938 county Junior Hurling team that won the All Ireland final. His studies took him to UCD where he won Fitzgibbon and Sigerson cup medals and a couple of Dublin Co Championship titles. After qualifying as a medical practitioner which took him all over the country and England, he still found time to play for his beloved county. More titles came his was, including a national hurling title, six Railway cup medals, and a Munster Junior Football medal. Dick was a selector to the Limerick Senior Hurling team that won the All Ireland in 1973, a team contained by Eamonn Grimes. He had a deep affection for Pallasgreen and was invited to all major functions within the club he had the honour of opening the dressing rooms in 1984 and was guest of honour in the Woodlands House Hotel in January 1999 when the 1948, '58, and '68 teams were honoured. On of nature's true gentlemen, he retained an amazing recall of games and friends during his life. The large turnout at his removal and internment testified to the esteem in which he was held. The coffin was draped in the colours of Pallasgreen GAA Club who formed a Guard of Honour from the Church to the Cemetery, Michael O'Riain of Moymore delivered an eloquent and fitting oration. Predeceased by his wife Cissy, sympathies are extended to Dick's sons John, Gerry and Ritchie; daughters Mary and Margaret; brothers Johnny, Jimmy and Nicolas; sisters Nellie and Mary; relatives and friends. Funeral was from Griffins Funeral Home, Limerick to our Lady Help of Christians Church in Milford following a requiem mass internment took place in Kilmurray Cemetery, Castletroy.
