Byrne, Mick

Late Mick Byrne This column had wished a very ill Michael (Mick) Byrne of Collinstown (formerly of Staplestown) a speedy recovery to health. Unfortunately Mick breathed his last, leaving a big void in the locality. Mick was a kind, friendly "never in a hurry" individual, a perfectionist at his work and a great neighbour. In his youth he was a solid full-back on the Staplestown football team, and when Staplestown and Timahoe united to form St. Kevins in the early 1960's he is credited with the nomination of the teams colours, red and black; probably influenced by Down's dominance at that time and there was no other black and red in Kildare. His colleagues from St. Kevins' formed a guard of honour at the removal of the remains to Derrinturn Church on Thursday evening where huge crowds attended, and at the burial to the adjoining cemetery on Friday. He is survived by Mary Ann, sons Michael and Frank, daughter Tracey, brother, sisters, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and other relatives to whom sympathy is extended.
