McCarthy, Paddy

The Late Paddy McCarthy Limerick scored a remarkable hurling double in 1940 when the minors and seniors won All-Ireland. The ever dwindling ranks of survivors from both teams was further reduced with the death of Mungret's Paddy McCarthy recently. The late Paddy McCarthy was a skillful and crafty hurler. Paddy figured as right half forward on the Limerick team that beat Antrim 6-4 to 2-4 in the 1940 All-Ireland final at Croke Park. The following year 1941 at the height of World War 2, Paddy wore the no. 5 jersey at Cusack Park in Ennis when Limerick defeated Galway 8-2 to 4-1 in the All Ireland junior hurling finals. As a mere youngster Paddy McCarthy played on the Mungret minor team that played Rathkeale three times in 1937, to decide the destiny of the 1935 Limerick minor hurling championship. On the first occasion on November 7th at Adare, they drew at 1-6 apiece. Two weeks later they again met, and it was a draw once more 2-3 each. The third meeting was also at Adare and Rathkeale won 6-1 to 3-1. The matter was not finished however, for Mungret objected, and were awarded the title. Sincere sympathy is extended to his surviving brothers, Tom in Mungret, Michael in Lurriga, Jim in England, Ernie in Australia, sister Geraldine, nieces and nephews.
