Caplis, Michael

The Late Michael Caplis The death has taken place of Michael (Mick) Caplis, Barnadomenny, Rearcross, aged 67. He became part of local sporting history back in the 1960's when he captained Sean Treacy's hurling team to victory over Kildangan in the County Intermediate Final on an April day in 1967 in the then Thurles sportsfield. An occasion which continues to be a major conversational topic when sporting men meet. The Treacy's club had only been founded six years earlier and that success was to be the launching pad to a series of triumphs and catapulted Sean Treacy's from being virtually unknown to becoming one of West Tipperary's most honour laden club. Mick Caplis was constantly active on the local sports scene well into his thirties, contemporaries who would gather almost every evening at Hogan's field for a game of "backs and forwards", in either hurling or football. Youngsters would be encouraged to join in and it was during those sessions that a number of children in the parish experienced the trill of kicking a leather football for the first time, or of having a sliotar at their disposal. Sport was not catered for at Rearcross N.S. in those times. The "45" card game was another at which Mick Caplis made his mark. Music was also to the fore in his life. He would regularly contribute a song or two at social gatherings and compositions by his former neighbour, the late James Armshaw, were always included in his repertoire. Attending agricultural shows was also on his social agenda. Following concelebrated mass in the Church of the Visitation, Rearcross, burial took place in Kilnarath cemetery. Sean Treacy's GAA club formed a guard of honour. Mick Capilis is survived by sister Nancy Deere relatives and friends. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader October 2002
