Power, Ollie

The Late Ollie Power At the age of 80, the death has taken place in Spring Valley Road, Paramus New Jersey, of Ollie Power, Power, formerly of Ballyneety. He married Gerti O'Sullivan from West Cork and was a butter maker in Brombanna Creamery in 1957. The previous year he played with his brothers Brendan and J.J. on the South Liberties team which won the Limerick junior hurling championship. Ollie was trainer of the team, coming from Kilrush, where he was in the navy. Both Brendan and J.J. and his sister, Mary and son, John, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Gerti, daughters, Kathleen and Mary Anne in New Jersey and his sister Kathleen in Ballyneety. John Keogh, Tony and Marion Cross, from Ballyneety attended his funeral. John preformed one of the readings at the funeral Mass. The green and gold of South Liberties was over the coffin, a fitting tribute to one who had dedicated to his native place and hurling. He was back in Ballyneety two years ago, meeting old friends, including Mick Croker, Sean Lynch, Christy O'Connell, Micky Butler and Fr Charley O'Neill, who played with him in the history making victory in 1946. He was at most of the South Liberties games in the golden era in the 1970s and 1980s. At the Gaelic Grounds on a wintry December, Sunday in 1972, he was the first on the winners rostrum to shake the hand of Eamonn Grimes, who had been presented with the Daly Cup. This was one of the many holidays he enjoyed in the Ballyneety district, a break he took from the USA where he intended to stay for two years when he left 55 years ago.
