The Late James Mackey The passing of James (Todsie) Mackey marks the end of an era for the legendary Ahane hurling dynasty. Mr Mackey from Castleconnell was a brother of the famous Mick, John and Paddy and a son of Tyler Mackey, who held a council seat in the Castleconnell area for many years. Although overshadowed by the feats of his unforgettable brothers, Todsie as he was affectionately known, was a formiddle hurler in his own right, according to GAA historian Sean Murphy. "He won two County Limerick senior hurling championships with famed Ahane. In 1946, when the wearers of the green and gold took the crown by 6-7 to 1-1 at the expense of Rathkeale, Todsie formed the top line of attack with his brothers Mick, who captained the side, and John," Mr Murphy said. Two years later, when Ahane beat Croom 2-3 to 0-1 in a foggy Parc na nGael, James wore the number 10 jersey as a half forward. He also won City Junior Hurling titles in 1953, 1954 and 1960 with St Joseph's where he was a member of the nursing staff before hanging up his boots, he added. Mr Mackey,who was laid to rest in Castleconnel was pre-deceased by his wife Lizzie two years ago. They had no children. Mr Mackey's passing was marked by County Councillors at Monday's, Council meeting, when Cllr Paddy Hourigan extended his sympathy to the members of the Mackey family.
