County Senior Football Championship

Fr. Caseys 0-12 Adare 1-09

Fr. Caseys Seniors made the short trip to Newcastle West last Thursday evening to face newly promoted Adare in round 1 of the County Senior Football Championship. In a group containing both 2016 finalists Monaleen and Drom/Broadford along with rising prospects in Na Piarsaigh and Rathkeale, both teams knew that getting early points on the board could be the making or breaking of their season. Fr. Caseys made a perfect start with a pointed free from Billy Quirke after two minutes. Adare added a brace of points before Cormac Roche levelled proceedings with a point from play. A third point from Adare was then cancelled out by Billy Quirke, curling a beautiful point inside the right hand post from 30 yards. There was little to separate the teams in the opening quarter with Fr. Caseys having the greater share of possession and our midfield duo of David Ward and Mike Sheehan coming out on top but Adare with their lively forwards always looked dangerous on the counter attack. Midway through the half Adare reacted quickest to a rare poor kickout and ran through the Fr. Caseys defence to rattle the back of the net. Fr. Caseys held their nerve and for the next 10 minutes they controlled the game. Points from midfielder Mike Sheehan and corner forward James Riordan reduced the margin before an Adrian Enright free from 20 yards levelled the game once more. Two more pointed frees followed, this time from the boot of Billy Quirke. Deep into injury time Adare replied with a point from open play to reduce the margin to a single point. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, Adare 1-04.

Adare tied the game once more with an early second half point. Points from Adrain Enright and Cormac Roche then followed either side of two Adare points and the teams were all square as we entered the last quarter. As in the first half Fr. Caseys seemed to be the most dominant team but in front of goal Adare seemed to be more clinical with their limited supply. Fr. Caseys failure to build a secure lead was then punished when Adare kicked a brace of points in quick succession and suddenly Fr. Caseys were two points behind with time running out. Many times in recent years Fr. Caseys have been guilty of throwing in the towel in similar predicaments but to their credit the Abbeyfeale men kept their nerve and a James Riordan point with less than 5 minutes on the clock reduced the margin to one. Adare were now desperate to defend their lead and their efforts seemed to have paid off only for corner forward Adrian Enright to show a moment of brilliance to find space and slot the ball over the bar from 35 yards. Now deep into injury time Fr. Caseys had one last chance to steal victory but despite Cormac Roches massive 45 yard effort from a placed ball the Adare keeper rose above his crossbar to take the ball down. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-12, Adare 1-09

Despite having the capability to claim maximum points, the general feeling was one of relief as we exited Newcastle West with a draw having trailed by 2 points with 5 minutes remaining. The management will be delighted with the heart shown by all players with veteran Seamus Lenihan rolling back the years and our three senior debutants Aaron Murphy, Adam Riordan and Darren Keane all giving great accounts of themselves. Next up are the county champions Monaleen this Friday night in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale at 7.30pm. This is a massive task for the team but I have no doubt the team will relish the challenge ahead. Your support would be greatly appreciated
