Tributes paid to tragic footballer Kieran, 22

'He was there for everyone,' says chairman of Newcastle West GAA.

Tributes have been paid to the young Newcastle West sportsman who tragically died over the Bank Holiday weekend. Kieran McMahon, 22, was a talented footballer, rugby and soccer player,' Kieran's family have long established links with Newcastle West GAA club.

His father, Joe, is a former senior coach and his brother, Mike, also plays GAA locally, and as well as playing rugby with the BruffRFC senior side. Hundreds attended Kieran's removal on Sunday and his funeral
Mass on Bank Holiday Monday. He is also survived by his mother, Tina, his sister Elaine, and a large extended family. Jimmy Lee, chairman of Newcastle West GAA club, said that the entire community is still in shock over Kieran's tragic death.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family. It's a fierce tragedy. His family, his aunts and uncles, they've all been involved [with the local GAA club]. "All we can do is offer our sympathy and support for the family if they need us in the weeks and months ahead".
A former student of the Desmond College secondary school in Gortboy, Kieran had achieved several successes as an underage sportsman in rugby, soccer and GAA. He played in midfield for the Newcastle West side that won the county under-21 title in December, and was a member of the club's senior football set-up.
Friends, coaches and teammates of Kieran's held a meeting at the Courtenay Lodge Hotel in Newcastle West on Saturday after his death had been announced. Counsellors also attended the meeting to provide support and advice.
Mr Lee said that Kieran was a quiet, thoughtful and caring young man who will be sorely missed. "Kieran was quiet, but he had a wide circle of very good friends. He was always very good to everyone; looking after them.
"He did everything he could for people. He was the kind of young fella who you never heard moaning and groaning. He was there for everyone; he'd
drop people home, he'd look after them."
