Disastrous Third Quarter Derails West Championship Campaign!
Newcastle West...............1-15, Knockaderry.....................2-14
The Bog Garden was the venue on Saturday last, Shane Hourigan refereed and conditions were very suitable. Though we fell behind to a pointed free at 2, we found good form in the first quarter and were 0-6 to 0-3 ahead at 16.
If we had taken our chances, including one cert of a goal, and conceded fewer frees - a disaster area on Saturday - our lead would have been doubled. Despite those two downs we were in a good place at half time, 0-11 to 0-7 ahead.
The third quarter was where the game was lost. We played very poorly in those 15 minutes, touch awful, passing very poor, marking non-existent, all over the place generally. In contrast Knockaderry could do no wrong, and put a remarkable 2-6 on the board in a 12 minute purple passage with a solitary point at 37 our only response, 0-7 behind with 15 minutes on the clock, we were in a bad place and only a super optimist could see a way out. However, a big defeat staring them in the face, our lads recovered and took the game to Knock in the final quarter, conceding a mere 0-1 and scoring 1-3 and failing to take scoring opportunities from play and frees that would have earned extra time at the very least.
We were disappointed to lose a game we could/should have won - Knock were minus Tom Condon and Don Hanley - and miss the opportunity to advance in this championship and benefit from the competitive games such a run ensures. Why we slipped up and played so poorly from 30-45 minutes will be the subject of much head scratching and analysis this week. Did complacency creep in, did the 'dust up' before half time affect us, did we run out of steam? Have some players not put in the hard training and are caught out when the ante ups and the going gets tough and the pressure comes on! One thing is certain anyway, we conceded far too many easy frees on Saturday, and committed too many fouls too. Hopefully, they'll be brought to book by their coaches and learn how to shadow, tackle, stand an opponent up, dispossess, block etc., without fouling. Anyway, we played well enough for 45 minutes in the Bog Garden, imploded for 15 minutes and are now out of the West. Hopefully the cloud has a silver lining!
Team: Ollie McCoy, Evan Egan, Seán Browne, Niall Enright, Michael O'Grady, Stephen Nix, Paul Hannon 0-3, Niall Kelleher 0-1, Eoin Hurley, Mark Kelly, Tony O'Connor 0-2, Timmy Nix, Aaron McCarthy 0-1, Michael McMahon 1-7, Andrew Curtin 0-1. Subs: James Kelly, Michael Mulcahy, Michael Martin, Michael Quilligan, Seán Neville, Seán Gleeson.
Training continues with the County League Group 2 against Cappamore next on the agenda. This was scheduled for Saturday last, but was postponed due to the clash with the above. It may be refixed for this week.
Next game in the County Championship is against Killeedy in Round 2.
SENIOR FOOTBALL
Training continues against St. Kieran's and the Championship is next, but no dates to hand. The progress of the Limerick senior football team will determine.
JUNIOR A FOOTBALL WEST LEAGUE ROUND 4
Newcastle West v
Fr. Casey's
The field, yesterday Tues-day at 7.30pm were the arrangements, with a change to Fr. Casey's Inch likely, due to ongoing remedial work at An Páirc na nGael. So far we have lost to Kilcornan/Cappagh in Round 1, won against Granagh-Ballingarry in Round 2, and conceded a w.o. to Glin in Round 3. Many of the County League/Championship winning Junior B team of 2012 have been promoted to senior, a couple have emigrated, injuries are taking a toll and, of course, the minors are unavailable due to the Leaving Cert. Call-ups for some golden oldies are on the agenda!
HURLING JUNIOR B West league round 4
Newcastle West v
St. Kieran's
The postponement of last Thursday's game due to unplayable Coolcappa and our own pitch closed for repairs brings to 3 out of 4 the games called off. Since the Round 1 win over Knockaderry, we have received a w.o. from Croagh-Kilfinny, given a w.o. to Templeglantine and, as mentioned, have had a postponement against our neighbors. The latter game may take place this week but we have no information as we go to press. Training continues.
UNDER 21
The hurling is done and dusted. We defend the Premier County football title in the autumn.
MINOR
Undefeated in the West A and B in hurling, similar in County Premier football, the focus for the next month is on the Leaving Cert. Best of luck to those sitting it.
UNDER 16
Premier in football and hurling, we completed our pre-exam programme with a win over Ahane in hurling and a defeat by Fr. Casey's in football. Junior Cert now takes centre stage.
U14 FOOTBALL
The team is doubly engaged this week, against Old Christians in the Championship on Wednesday and against Monaleen in the County League Final on Saturday. We pipped Monaleen in the Féile Final and recently lost to Old Christians at the field, so we're definitely in for a tough week. In June the team is off to Derry to represent the county in Féile Peil, while a week later Féile na nGael hurling comes to Limerick. We're hosting the famous Laois club - Camross. Training is under way, as is fundraising and support is appreciated.
U12 FOOTBALL
Newcastle West.........4-3 Dromcollogher-Broadford..................0-3
On Thursday last our U12 footballers travelled to Drom to play the locals. Played in difficult underfoot conditions, this proved to be a very competitive game against a strong Drom side. The first half was very even with both defences on top. Our backs marshalled by Michael Cremin at full back and Brian Foley at centre held firm under strong pressure from the Drom lads. It was in this half that Jody Woulfe and in particular Todd Donovan shone in the corner back slots. On the few occasions Drom got through on goal Robert Bourke was up to the task. Our lone score of the half was a point from Luke Gleeson following good work from Padraig Walsh. Morgan Sheehan worked tirelessly at half forward and Cillian Collins was very unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.
At half time we introduced our three subs Liam McMahon, Rial McGann and Michael Nash and all had an influence on proceedings. Drom came out strong in the second half and scored two points in reply to our one from Bryan Nix to put them a point ahead. It was then that our lads got going and strong attacking play from Conor Walker and Jack Duggan started creating openings for our forwards. Our goals came from Dylan Singh with a long range effort, Evan McMahon who rounded the keeper following good interplay, and a rasper from Daniel Normoyle and Bryan Nix who also added a further point. All in all a good game and strong finish from our lads who have now won both of their football games.
Team: Robert Bourke, Jody Woulfe, Michael Cremin, Todd Donovan, Dylan Singh, Brian Foley, Conor Walker, Evan McMahon, Daniel Normoyle, Morgan Sheehan, Bryan Nix, Jack Duggan, Cillian Collins, Luke Gleeson, Padraig Walsh, Michael Nash, Liam McMahon, Rial McGann.
Newcastle West.........3-8
Fr. Casey's................3-3
We faced Fr. Casey's in our first football match in Monagea. Playing against a strong breeze, we led by 2-2 to 1-3 at half time. Under severe pressure our backs played extremely well.
In the second half we played some good football, scoring 1-7 to Fr. Casey's 2 goals. All in all it was a satisfactory display for our first match.
Team and scorers: Michael Cremin, Brian Foley 0-1, Padraig Walsh, Conor Walker, Ruadhan O'Connor, Evan Sheehan, Daniel Normoyle 0-1, Brian Nix 0-3, Evan McMahon 0-1, Dylan Singh 1-0, Rial McGann, Andrew Mortell, Robert Bourke, Mikey O'Connor 1-1, Todd Donovan, Jack Duggan, Cillian Collins, Oisin O'Sullivan, Jody Woulfe 1-1.
Thank you to Monagea club for the use of their pitch.
Following a weather disrupted first phase, we have won all four of our games in hurling and football. We have two back matches, both against a strong St. Kieran's, in football and hurling.
UNDER 10
A hurling blitz on Friday next is likely. Details are not at hand. Training is on Wednesdays at 6pm and on Saturdays at 10am.
UNDER 8
Football Blitz
We welcomed Askeaton-Ballysteen and Feohanagh-Castlemahon to the excellent all weather and enjoyed three exciting, well contested, high quality games in summer conditions. Ourselves and Feohanagh-Castlemahon got the blitz under way. Askeaton-Ballysteen against Feohanagh-Castlemahon was the second game, and in the third game we opposed Askeaton-Ballysteen. The games were 11-a-side, 10 minutes a half, with the blitz over and done with in about 1½ hours.
Panel: Andrew Lyons, Cathal Hayes, Darragh O'Grady, Matt Hannon, Oran Kelly, Diarmuid Lyons, Seán Ambrose, Padraig Sheedy, Jack Kelly, Johnny O'Kelly, Billy Walsh, Adam Costelloe, Reece Daly.
There are further blitzes on the agenda and training is on Wednesdays from 6.15pm to 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 11.15am. New players born in 2005/2006 are always welcome.

Limerick topped the Allianz Football League Division 4 table despite scoring just 78 points during their 7 games (11 points per match). Only London (75 points) scored less. Limerick's success was based on their stingy defending with a concession of 71 points. Tipperary were the top scorers in the division with 106 points on aggregate (15+ per game) but conceded 90 points. Waterford (For 90, against 96) and Clare (For 96, Against 86) were the other Munster counties in Division 4.
Limerick's Ian Ryan was the top scorer in the 2012 Munster Senior Football Championship with 1-17 (0-11 frees) in two matches. Colm Cooper (Kerry) with 0-9 (0-5 frees) and Colm O'Neill with 0-9 (0-3 frees) finished joint second.
There was an 18% decrease in the number of scores in the 2012 Munster Senior Football Championship as compared to 2011 (33 scores per game versus 27) but overall the trend is up over recent years - 2008 (21 scores per game), 2009 (24 scores per game), 2010 (28 scores per game), 2011 (33 scores per game), 2012 (27 scores per game).
