Junior Camogie League Final
Cappamore 1.09
Kilmallock 2.05
The Final Whistle blew in Knocklong on Sunday and in the eyes of the Cappamore players, it could not come any sooner. In a pulsating game from start to finish Cappamore fully deserved their first adult trophy of the new era
Both Teams opened the game at a steady pace, but it was Kilmallock who settled the quickest, taking advantage of some space to knock over good scores, Cappamore finally got into the game with scores coming from Elizabeth O Dwyer. The cappamore Forward line was made to work hard with the Kilmallock Defence playing a sweeper. But Credit to the Forward line they stuck at it and maybe should have had a few more scores. Kilmallock in turn Broke quick from the back and this proved very effective , the Game could have been over at the break was it not for some fine saves by Claire Keating and the defence to following up. But Kilmallock finally got the goal, to go 4points ahead. Cappamore Kept going and got further scores from Elizabeth O Dwyer and Marie Berekey At the break it was 1.3 to 0.5 in favour of Kilmallock
Cappamore began the second half with great intensity and commitment and once the middle of the field got hold of the ball they laid siege on the Kilmallock goal. For the first 15 minutes it looked like Kilmallock were not going to let cappamore back into it.
Muireann Creamer was causing havoc in the square but scores were not coming, Finally cappamore open their account from Elaine Berekery and Elizabeth O Dwyer. Cappamore upped the pressure again but still the Kilmallock defence stood solid and a breakaway points put Kilmallock 1 up with 10 to go. Claire Keating now deployed at centerfield was pulling the strings. A long delivery and knock down by Ann Marie Leahy saw the ball roll over the line from Rebecca Conroy. Further points from Claire Keating now put four between them. Kilmalock had a few change to get back into it but all they could manage was a late goal. Cappamore held out to win by just the single point.
Geraldine Ryan accepted the Cup on behalf of the team. A player that fully deserves to lead this Team.
The players deserve great credit and gave huge commitment to win this league trophy. But they will know that there is a championship campaign to come in the summer and will have to step it up a level but This is a step in the right direction.
Great credit must also go to the Camogie club and especially Seamus Keating & Dan McKenna who brought this core group of players from U10 upwards. Along the way building a hard working and determined squad of players.
