On Sunday last what a momentous day for Ahane GAA Club with the unveiling of the Mick Mackey statue in Castleconnell. Mick must have been looking down as we were blessed with a fine day. As 12.30pm approached a huge crowd had assembled in the village and all the invited dignitures had arrived. The day started with a parade with the Boherbouy Band followed by the underage teams from Ahane made of Hurling, football, camoige, ladies football. John Meskell was MC for the day and what a job he done he kept proceedings going. Invited guests were Liam O Neill president CLG Robert Frost chairman Munster Council Michael O Muircheartaigh and numerous others. Boherbouy Band played the national anthem
Chairman Turlough Herbert got proceedings under way and he welcomed everyone for attending. He was followed by numerous speakers but the crowd became silent went singer Anne Mulqueen went up to sing the song Mick Mackey and his Men. Following this president of the GAA Liam O Neill spoke and when finished Liam O Neill and Chairman Turlough Herbert unveiled the statue with music by the band to a huge appaluse. The statue was blessed by Fr Liam Ryan. Mick Mackey's 2 daughter's laid 2 wreaths at the statue. As proceedings came to a close it was time for many photographs to be taken and then all guests were invited back to the clubhouse for a meal. In the clubhouse the 3 Hartnett brother's Seamus,Gearoid, Padraig entertained the guests as they enjoyed there dinner. In the clubhouse many stories of long ago were told as young and old met. The statue of Mick Mackey stands proud in his home village along side his home where he will have many visitors and many a photo will be taken in the future.
