Newcastle West club notes

May 15, 2013
Both clubs happy to share the points

Intermediate Hurling Co. Championship Round 1

Newcastle West ...............................1-13
Cappamore ......................................1-13

First and foremost each and every one of our players played a valuable part in securing last Friday's draw at Clarina where conditions were very good. The commitment was 100%, the work ethic was excellent, all the players gave it their all in pursuit of the two points on offer.

Defending the dressing room goals the team didn't have a good start, conceding 1-1 in the opening 6 minutes. However 0-1 from Mike McMahon at 6 minutes and a goal also by Mike at 8 minutes created by Andrew Curtin and a further point by Mike from a free at 12 minutes had the teams level 1-2 each at 15. 0-4 to us (Mike Mac 0-2, Andy Curtin 0-1, Paul Hannon 0-1 and 0-5 to Cappamore had the 2011 to County Junior Champions ahead 1-6 to 1-7 at half-time.

In the third quarter we had moved 0-2 ahead, 1-12 to 1-10 at 47 and Cappamore looked rattled. However, we didn't build on our lead and at 56 Cappamore were ahead by 0-1 and a pointless return to Desmond town was looking likely. Mike with a good point at 57 saved the day and Lady Luck smiled on us at the death when the normally very accurate Cappamore free taker failed with successive efforts from no more than 50 metres. We could have snatched it late but Mike Mc's free from 85 metres just fell short and was cleared. Overall both teams will be happy to have got a draw! All our lads contributed majorly, all working hard, all putting shoulders to the wheel, all digging deep, all putting in a huge effort. Well done to all.

Team: Ollie McCoy, Evan Egan, Sean Browne, James Kelly, Michael O'Grady, Niall Kelleher, Niall Enright, Paul Hannon 0-1, Stephen Nix, Mark Kelly, Tony O'Connor 0-2, Shane Kelly, Andrew Curtin 0-2, Mike McMahon 1-8, Timmy nix. Subs Eoin Hurley, Stephen Kelly, Michael Martin, Aaron McCarthy, Michael Mulcahy, Pa Keane, Kieran McMahon, Conor Fanning, Donnacha Woods, Seanie Gleeson.

Next up at the weekend Sunday (but check) is the West Inter County Championship v old rivals Knockaderry. We won this title for the first time in 2012, defeating Tom Condon's team in the final, late in the year. Training continues.

In round 2 of the championship we faced Killeedy, winners over Kildimo-Pallaskenry in round 1 at the weekend.

Donal Enright refereed and Sunday's game v Knockaderry is at the Bog Garden at 2p.m.

Senior Football Co. Championship Round 2

Newcastle West v St. Kieran's

Both teams enjoyed round 1 success, Kierans defeating St. Patrick's, ourselves getting the better of Pallasgreen, well not getting the better of Johnny McCarthy and co without a seriously committed effort. It is a bonus that Stephen Kelly is recovering from his injuries. Training continues.

Junior B Hurling West League Round 2 refixture

Newcastle West v Templeglantine

Having received a w/o from Croagh/Kilfinny the previous week it was our turn to concede the dreaded walkover on Sunday last when we had a dozen but not the required 15 for the game changed to Tour on Sunday at 2p.m. Disappointing for the 12, the management and the supporters who made the journey. Training continues and we are hopeful to see the team in a position to field St. Kierans on Thursday at Coolcappa.

We did of course lose half a dozen to the inter team.

Junior A Football West League Round 3

Newcastle West v Glin

A w/o here also, with James Hennessy unable to put a team together. A number who lined out in the win over Granagh/Ballingarry and the defeat to Cappagh/Kilcornan, have upgraded to senior and lined out v Pallasgreen, some regulars were unavailable, the Leaving Cert and Third Level exams have some downing tools for a fortnight, while a few are carrying injuries. Hopefully with various things settling down, we will be able to field for the remaining league games and for the Co. Championship.

U-21, Minor, U-16

No action here with 3rd level exams underway and Leaving and Junior Certs around the corner. Best of luck to all who are involved.

U-14 Co. League

Division 1

Newcastle West v Old Christians

The Field was the venue on Saturday last. Final result and account are not available at the time of going to press, but Old Christians rallied in the second half after we led at half-time, and won. They are a physically strong` team. They defeated us in the 2012 Co. U-13 final
