Hyland, Johnny

January 05, 2012
The annual Galbally coursing, successful though it might have been, was tinged with sadness and regret at the absence of former secretary Johnny Hyland who died last week after a short illness, writes John Barrett.

Johnny, an affable and very popular member of the local community, was, you see, part and parcel of what Galbally coursing was all about. Always there to make all the necessary arrangements, he was the very lifeblood of Galbally Coursing Club. A 'doggie' man at heart, Johnny Hyland was, however, much more than that. A vital cog in the local community through his role with the water services department of Limerick County Council, he was also one of the guiding lights behind Galbally GAA club, steering the club through the highs and lows over a number of decades.

Johnny was always on hand to answer the call no matter what the occasion demanded and his diligence as a committed member of the local community was matched only by his day to day to kindness as a husband, father, neighbour and friend. Johnny Hyland's relatively mature years were belied by a youthful and progressive approach that enhanced community life in Galbally for several decades.

In his late 70s, Johnny had the exuberance and enthusiasm of a 50 year old; such was his stamina and sterling work ethic. His untimely passing is not just a severe and sad loss to his wife Nancy, son Noel, family and friends, but also to community life in Galbally for several decades.

The high esteem in which Johnny Hyland was held was reflected in the large and representative gathering that attended the removal of his remains from Frazer's Funeral Home to the Church of Christ the King and subsequent burial in the local cemetery. A moving tribute by his close friend, Tim Ryan had many in tears at the funeral Mass as mourners gathered to pay their final respects.

We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Nancy, son Noel and other relations and friends on their sad loss.
