UNDER 14 FOOTBALLERS DO THE CLUB PROUD IN CORK!
U14 FEILE PEIL
All in the club are very proud of the under 14 footballers who did themselves, their families, the parish, club and county proud with their performances at the Féile Peil in Cork at the weekend. Playing in the high quality Division 2, the first Limerick team to play at this level, they had wins over host club Bantry Blues, Castlehaven, Dunmanway, all Cork football strongholds and Lucan Sarsfields, Dublin reps, in the 4 group games. They overcame Tyrone champions Newry Shamrocks in the semi-final and were there or thereabouts v Antrim champions St. Enda's (0-4 to 2-4) in the final. In addition Brian Hurley, outstanding for the team at centre forward reached the skills final in which he was runner-up. Well done also to mentors John Hurley, Willie Hurley, Henry Long, Jim Fanning and Pa Keane who have worked long hours to bring the team to such a high standard. Thanks to the parents for their out-standing support. Well done to all from the club who travelled to cheer on the team and many thanks to all who gave such very generous sponsorship. All in all a great weekend for our club and well done to all who made it so.
From Pairc Amuigh
to Pairc Uí Chaoimh
In the spring of 2004 the word was sent out on the grapevine that hurling and football training would be happening on Saturday mornings at Pairc Amuigh, Newcastle West camogie field. A large group of wide eyed young sportsmen presented themselves under the big tree. The encouraging words and the firm instructions of the strangely familiar trainer (had they seen him a lot around Christmas?) soon settled early nerves and they started to learn the skills of hurling and football.
Since then a few have moved on to other interests and others have joined the ranks but the group's enthusiasm and willingness to learn has continued. On the field they have had some disappointments and many successes since those early sessions with Noel O'Connor.
Last Thursday morning these boys left Newcastle West as the club's first ever Féile Peil county representatives for a journey into unknown sporting territory. They returned just under 60 hours later as heroes, having played their hearts out in 6 games to come within a couple of scores of capturing the Féile Peil Division 2 title.
The advantage began early on Thursday as the players and mentors arrived in their new club gear for the bus journey to West Cork. The busy schedule included two games on the first day against two well known Cork clubs, Bantry Blues and Castlehaven.
Game 1
Newcastle West.........1-10
Bantry Blues................0-0
The Magpies got to wear their brand new jerseys in this game and it inspired them to a great start. Cormac Long opened the scoring, quickly followed by a Liam McCartan point and despite the same player missing a penalty we took control and picked off some fine scores. The result was never in doubt but we found it difficult to get a goal until the introduction of Darragh O'Shea whose first action was to smash home a rebound from a Darragh Morrissey shot. In this game we were able to give game time to all 24 players. Unfortunately our captain William Hurley injured his back just at the end of this match.
Scorers Darragh O'shea 1-1, William Hurley 0-3, Liam McCartan 0-2, Brian Hurley 0-2, Cormac Long 0-1, Gerald Griffins 0-1.
Game 2
Newcastle West.........2-11
Castlehaven.................0-3
Our next game was against a strong Castlehaven team managed by the legendary Niall Cahalane. In their first game they were edged out by a very strong Lucan team. The early exchanges were very even with the Cork team's strong No. 8 winning a lot of possession in midfield and running at our defence. Newcastle West's greater fitness saw them begin to dominate but scores were hard to come by. Again Darragh O'Shea was brought into the forwards and again he used his first touch of the ball to send a bullet of a shot to the net. In the second half we were well on top with another sub Colm Foley scoring three fine points.
Scorers Brian Hurley 1-5, Cormac Long 0-1, Colm Foley 0-3, Caleb O'Shea 0-1, Liam McCartan 0-1, Darragh O'Shea 1-0.
This was the end of the football for the day and the boys relaxed with a walk around Dunmanway and a photo opportunity with the Sam Maguire statue.. Then it was onto the bus to head for the parade in Cork city which turned out to be one of the highlights of the weekend.
The boys eventually got to meet their host families at around 10.30p.m. and went off to rest and reflect on what many described as a perfect day.
Game 3
Newcastle West...........1-6
Lucan Sarsfields..........0-7
All were up early for the trip back to Dunmanway for a 10a.m. throw-in. The Dublin team had only one game on Thursday and were flying from the start. A magnificent point from a line ball by their midfielder in the first minute set the tone and with 3 minutes gone we were 3 points down and hadn't seen the ball. Eventually we got some possession and strong running by Liam McCartan and Brian Hurley got us on the attack. Gerald Griffin sent a great ball across the goal that was almost finished to the net but the rebound came to Gerald who had followed in his kick and he scored a brilliant goal with his left foot. This was the crucial score of the game as it gave the boys the confidence to run at the Lucan defence and draw fouls. No one at this game will ever forget the tension and drama of the second half as we got ahead and held out for an historic victory.
Scorers Gerald Griffin 1-0, Brian Hurley 0-3, Darragh Morrissey 0-1, Cormac Long 0-1, Liam McCartan 0-1.
Game 4
Newcastle West ........6-13
Sam Maguires ............1-1
We went into this game knowing that a win would see us top the group and head back to Cork for a semi-final. The previous epic game had taken its toll however and we were slow to get going with team work being forgotten as players went for im- possible scores. However, Gerald Griffin took a grip on this game and his scores settled the team.
In the second half we put up a big score with our under 13 players to the fore.
Scorers Gerald Griffin 1-4, Caleb O'Shea 2-2, Darragh Fox 1-1, Darragh O'Shea 1-0, Seamus Hurley 1-0, Liam McCartan 0-2, Darragh Morrissey 0-1.
After the game we celebrated the great achievement of topping the group and qualifying for an All Ireland semi-final and had lovely food in a local hotel. Then it was on to the famous Glen field in Cork to play Newry Shamrocks.
Game 5
Newcastle West...........2-4
Newry Shamrocks......1-5
Newry had been based at this venue in their group while we had a lot of travelling between Bantry, Dunmanway and Cork, so we were worried that they might be fresher. In the early stages we gave them too much space and their forwards looked threatening. However, a goal after a good run through the middle from Brian Hurley had us ahead. Newry reeled us in with some good points and with normal time in the first half we were level 1-0 to 0-3.
Then the real damage started. First we thought we had a penalty but didn't. Then Brian scored from a free. Newry broke down the field and a ball deflected to an inrushing forward who gave Conor O'Sullivan no chance. So we regrouped at half time and the boys were asked to mark tighter and to run at the opposition.
In the second half we were a transformed team from the start as Liam McCartan drove through the middle to score an inspirational point. Then Gerald Griffin looked to have scored but a great diving save by the goalie put the ball over the bar and the sides were level. Then came an unforgettable goal from Brian Hurley, well described in the Irish Examiner the next day. Three points ahead with 7 minutes to play, the Newry team began the fight back but our defence were magnificent. There was a long delay with 3 minutes left as a Newry player fell heavily and aggravated a rib injury and was stretchered off to an ambulance. Thankfully he has made a full recovery. During this break the Newcastle West team got together and decided to 'man up' and defend their lead by tight defence and carrying the ball at the Newry defence. This plan worked to perfection and the Ulster boys were held to one point. Injury time again went on longer than expected but we kept the ball away from our goals with Sean Ivess out-standing. There were emotional scenes at the end as players were greeted by family and supporters including many who made the journey to Cork that evening.
Then it was back to the host families who we met at around 10p.m. with time to rest and prepare for an All Ireland Final.
On our 6th and final journey along the West Cork roads the mood was quiet but determined as we approached the famous Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Semi-final scorers Brian Hurley 2-2, Gerald Griffin 0-1, Liam McCartan 0-1.
Game 6
Newcastle West ..........0-4
St. Enda's ...................2-4
This was a game between two evenly matched sides, who both gave their all in a sporting game played in intense heat and sunshine. Our titanic games on Friday and all the travelling probably affected our boys as they found it difficult to get their running and passing game going. The Antrim boys were a bit fresher on the day and took their two goal chances well, while our two goal chances ended with a wide and a save. Still, the Newcastle West team played to the very end and can be proud of their effort. It was great to see Jack Fanning make an appearance in the final and hopefully his injury problems are coming to an end. William Hurley made a brief appearance also, having been injured in our first game and the team deserve even greater credit for achieving what they did without a player of his class.
Scorers: Darragh Morrissey got two of the best points seen in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, Liam McCartan 0-1, Brian Hurley 0-1.
This report only covers the matches played which was only a small part of the whole unforgettable experience. We will revisit some of the many highlights next week but just to briefly thank the parents and supporters, the Bantry Blues club, Tim Madigan (legend) but mostly the heroic players of Newcastle West's Féile team.Three words to close "ogi, ogi, ogi".

Kildimo......................1-16
Kildimo was the venue on Tuesday June 29th. A competitive first half had the teams level at half time, 2-7 to 1-10 to Kildimo with Mike Mac top scorer with 1-3 and Aaron McCarthy responsible for a green flag also. Mike Martin, back from injury, came into the game in the 2nd half and played well, contributing 1-2, while Mike McMahon was again very accurate from frees. We lined out as follows: Ollie McCoy, Brian O'Doherty, Pa Keane, Ray Massey, Mike Mulcahy, Martin Hennessy, Paul Hannon, Tim Nix, Seán Browne 0-1, Niall Enright, Mike McMahon 2-7, Andy Curtin 0-2, Aaron McCarthy, Damien Gerrity, Kieran McMahon. Sub: Mike Martin 1-2.
Junior B Hurling West Championship Group 1 Round 3
Newcastle West...........2-7
Feohanagh....................0-6
Feenagh was the venue on Monday last and Jason Mullins refereed. Conditions were windy but dry. It was a very competitive and sporting game. Each team created plenty of scoring chances with our lads taking more of theirs. This, plus excellent defending and some top class saves from Damien in goals gave us the victory and a 3rd win out of three games played.
Team: Damien Gerrity, Conor Fanning, Pa Keane, Ronan Kelleher, James Hennessy, Darren McCarthy 0-1, Tom Ryan, Tony Doyle, Ray Massey 1-1, Michael O'Keeffe 0-1, Niall Kelleher, Aaron McCarthy, Daithí Nash 0-1, Declan Brouder 1-0, Seanie Gleeson 0-4.
We were 1-4 to 0-3 ahead at half time having faced the wind v Croagh/Kilfinny in our 4th and final group game.
Junior B Football West Championship Round 2
Newcastle West v Mountcollins
Probably tomorrow Thursday but no venue as yet. We are on two points after a round 1 win over Glin.
Minor Football West A Championship round 2
Newcastle West ........2-10
Shannon Gaels
(Glin and
Gerald Griffin's) ......1-12
"A good overall performance and a brilliant point blank save by Andy Brouder five minutes from time were the key to this victory," was the summation of our man on the spot at last Friday's well contested game in Glin where Billy Phillips refereed. All twenty players on the panel got a run and Seamus O'Connor and Darragh Woods mentored.
Team: Andy Brouder, Jack McCarthy, Eoin Murphy, Rossa Dooley, Seán Darcy, Brian O'Sullivan, Emmet Kelly, Ryan Clancy 0-6, Gavin Reidy, James Quaid 2-1, James O'Sullivan, Andrew Ruddle, Gary Shanahan, James Corbett 0-1, Jordan Power. Subs: James Cussen 0-2, Darragh Quilligan, Peter Shanahan, Joey Healy, Martin Mullane.
U16 FOOTBALL COUNTY A CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 5
Newcastlewest.............1-9
Monaleen......................1-9
The Field was the venue on Monday last and Tom Enright refereed. Monaleen were the better team in the first half and led 0-6 to 0-3 at half time with our lads contributing significantly with bad wides, a lot of inaccurate passing and a work rate that could have been better. But for excellent goalkeeper Andy Brouder we would have been further behind.
Things went from bad to worse in the 3rd quarter, 1-1 to Monaleen against our 0-2 extending their lead to 0-5 with a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-5 at 45. This had grown to 0-6 at 51 and the game looked lost with a mere 10 minutes left. However, we played our best football in those 10 minutes, the excellent Martin Madden, our man of the match was at the centre of the moves that could/should have yielded 2/3 goals and did eventually give us the draw that we deserved. Overall, the team showed good character to fight back for a draw. Martin as we have said was clever, hardworking, team orientated, our man of the match but a big improvement is needed in many areas and of work rate, cohesion and accuracy, if we are to be involved at the business end of the season.
Team: Andy Brouder, Conor Barry, Eoin Murphy, Darragh McMahon, Eoin Hurley (0-1), Andrew Ruddle (1-0), Brian Sheehy, Gavin Riedy (0-1), Shane Stack, James Cussen (0-2), Jack McCarthy, Peter Shanahan (0-1), Martin Madden (0-1), Darragh Quilligan (0-3) and A.J. O'Connor. Subs: Liam McCartan, Aidan Curtin, Sean Ivess, Declan O'Connor, Conor Relihan.
U12 FOOTBALL COUNTY LEAGUE
Newcastle West ........2-10
Mungret ......................1-2
Following the exploits of our U14s in Cork, our U12s took to the field last Thursday night against previously unbeaten Mungret. Captained by Caolan Dooley, we played with a very slight breeze in the first half in perfect conditions. We quickly got into our stride.
Darragh Enright put us ahead after 2 minutes with a fine point and further points from Dylan Whelan (2) and Darren Keenan put us 0-4 to 0-0 ahead after 15 minutes. Mungret replied with a fine goal to leave just one point in it and would have had a second if not for a brilliant save from Seán Walton.
Encouraged, Mungret piled on the pressure but failed to add to the tally, due mainly to excellent defending from Lee Woulfe, Oisin Brennan, Mike Carroll, Brian Curtin and the outstanding Jack Downey. We then tagged on 2 points, both from Dylan Whelan before half time which gave us a 0-6 to 1-0 lead at the short whistle.
Mungret had shown enough in the first half for us to know that we were in for a game in the second. However, we got off to the perfect start when Dylan Whelan powered through and cracked an unstoppable shot to the net. This was quickly followed by a Darren Keenan point. Dylan and Niall McAuliffe had taken over midfield at this stage and when Dylan got through for his second goal 10 minutes in, the game was effectively over. We continued to attack the Mungret goal and with speedy attackers like Ben Finnegan, Caolan Dooley and Jack Nash coming more into the game, things began to look up.
However, Mungret put on a bit of a spurt at this stage and scored the next 2 points without reply. Conor Finucane, Cormac Nash and Blayne Aherne had joined the fray at this stage and helped close out the game. We then got the game's last score, when another clearance by Jack Downey was well fielded by Martin McCoy who slipped a great pass to the inrushing Seán Walton who struck a fine shot between the uprights and put us in a very comfortable position. Darragh Collins and Dylan O'Connell had joined the action at this stage and both proved a handful for the Mungret defence. Gavin Lane and Ross Donovan were also introduced in the second half and didn't put a foot wrong. This was possibly our best display of the season. All 21 players who saw action acquitted themselves well in what was a fine team performance. While one would not normally pick out an individual performance in a team game, special mention should be made of powerful midfielder Dylan Whelan who notched a brilliant 2-6 from frees and play, an outstanding achievement!
Next up for this group is a hurling challenge v Newtownshandrum at the field this Thursday. Players will be contacted as usual.
Team/scorers: Seán Walton (0-1), Jack Downey, Lee Woulfe, Oisín Brennan, Mikey Carroll, Brian Curtin, Dylan Whelan (2-6), Niall McAuliffe, Ben Finnegan, Damien Keenan (0-2), Caolan Dooley, Darragh Enright, Jack Nash, Gavin Lane, Ross Donovan, Conor Finucane, Cormac Nash, Blayne Aherne, Martin McCoy, Darragh Collins, Dylan O'Connell.
Footnote: we wish a speedy recovery to ace forward Warren Coughlan, hope to see you at the field soon.

U8s
Hurling Cluster Blitz
The U8s were in Askeaton for a hurling cluster blitz on Friday evening last. We played Askeaton, Pallaskenry and St. Kieran's. The games were exciting, competitive and enjoyable. All players got plenty of game time and got a chance to develop their skills in a competitive environment and really enjoyed the post blitz refreshments.
Panel: Con Hayes, Oisin Collins, Tyler Clancy, Aaron Neville, Ethan Kirwan, Leon Barry, John O'Grady, Jack O'Connor, Dylan Scanlon, Eddie Ward, Josh, Michael O'Connor, Emmet Richter, James Lyons, Ciaran Slater, Nathan Cremin, Jamie O'Regan, Paudie Kelly, John Whelan, Seán Ryan, Donal Bourke.
Training is on Wednesdays from 6.30 to 7.30p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 to 11.30a.m. but there is no training this week due to the summer camp at the field.
SUMMER CAMP
Almost 120 players are currently enjoying the week's annual summer camp at the field with well known coach George Fitzgibbon, intercounty hurler Dinny Moloney (Doon), Robbie Hammond (Ahane), intercounty footballer Alva Neary (All Ireland junior medallist in 2010), the Old Mill, Maria O'Riordan (Newcastlewest senior camogie player), Mike Sammon (NCW club coach). Thanks are extended to the people in charge and many players and coaches from our club for helping out. So far the weather has been excellent and hopefully it will remain so for the week.
INTERCOUNTY SENIOR HURLING QUALIFIERS
Limerick....................1-21
Wexford......................2-13
Many from the club made the journey to the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening last and were delighted with the win, with unity, spirit, workrate, game plan and plenty of skill in evidence. On Saturday next at 7p.m. Parnell Park is the venue and the supporters will be on the road bright and early. Antrim will be no pushover but it will be a major surprise if Limerick fail to advance to the quarter final.
INTERCOUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL QUALIFIERS
Limerick v Offaly
Saturday next at 2p.m. at the Gaelic Grounds are the arrangements. The big question is will Mark O'Riordan and Stephen Lucey be available. If they're missing, Limerick's chances of advancing are very slim. Stephen and James Kelly (players) and Joe Lee (selector) are involved.
CLUB LOTTERY
Last Monday's draw took place at Ned Lynch's. The numbers drawn were 7, 8, 21 and 28. The jackpot of €16,000 was not won. The 5 x €40 lucky dip winners were Dawn Power c/o Arra Vet, Brian Casey, Ballintemple; Sandra Cleary c/o Seán Roche, Tommy Grey c/o Seán Roche, Angela Murphy c/o Fitzgerald's Corner Bar. Next week's jackpot is €16,200. The draw takes place at John Flavin's on Monday next July 11th at 11p.m. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery draw.

West Junior B Football Championship Rounds 2/3
Newcastle West...................................................................2-17
Mountcollins........................................................................2-10
On a cold, wet, windy and generally miserable Thursday evening in Knockaderry the junior B footballers made it two wins from two starts in the 2011 Championship.
Though Mountcollins made the better start, our lads were soon into their stride and led 1-8 to 0-3 at half time. Mountcollins were more competitive in the second half and put a respectable 2-7 on the scoreboard without ever looking winners. A satisfactory win for our lads with their 17 points a very satisfactory aspect.
Team: James Stack, James Hennessy, Mike Culhane, Conor Fanning, Padraig Devine, Karl Linehan, Niall Kelleher, Tony Doyle, Ger Cremin 0-3, Ronan Kelleher, Declan Brouder 0-3, Mark Doherty 0-4, Jonathan Carey 0-4, Conor Fitzpatrick 1-1, Seánie Gleeson 1-2. Subs: Tommy Kelleher, Tony Aherne, Karl Hayes, Seán Corbett, Willie Kavanagh, Mark O'Sullivan.
Round 3 will be against Ballysteen.
Senior County Football Championship round 4
Newcastle West v Ballylanders is on the long finger while Limerick's winning run in the quali-fiers continues. Hopefully this will be later rather than sooner! Training continues with Duagh the latest opponents in a challenge.
Intermediate County Championship round 3
Newcastle West are to play Ballybrown, but like the senior footballers, our inter mediate hurlers will see no further action while the county seniors are involved in the championship. Training continues.
West Junior B Hurling Championship round 4
Newcastle West are to play Croagh-Kilfinny. We are on full points after three games and have put a nice team together, strong and mature down the centre, lively on the wings and good hurlers in all posi-tions. Training continues and the ambitious and committed will be there; this team could win the West.
Minors
We are out of the 12-a-side All County Hurling, unable to field, but are going well in the west football.
U16 County Football Championship Division 1
Newcastle West.........2-14
Mungret-St Paul's......2-6
Mungret was the venue on Monday and Ballybrown's Michael Mann refereed. Conditions were ideal for football and our lads were the better team and fully deserved their win. There were good displays around from players who are talented, skilled, fast. Tough Andrew Ruddle (why he's not on the coun-ty team to contest the weekend's Humphrey Kelleher team is a mystery considering his skill, work rate, commitment, honesty of effort) and Shane Stack were particularly promi-nent, while Martin Madden added further to his reputation as a clever and effective play-maker.
Team: Andy Brouder, Conor Barry, Eoin Mur-phy, Darragh McMahon, Brian Sheehy, Eoin Normoyle, Jack McCarthy, Andrew Ruddle, Gavin Reidy, Peter Shanahan, Eoin Hurley, Shane Stack, James Cussen, Darragh Quilligan, Martin Madden. Subs: Cian Sheehan, Daniel Copse, Brian Hurley, Seán Ivess. Next opponents are Oola in football and Kilmallock in hurling.
Training
U14 and U12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays 5.30pm, Saturdays 2pm.
U10 on Saturdays 10am and Wednesdays 6.30pm..
U8 on Saturdays 10am at An Pairc Amuigh and on Wednesdays 6.30pm at the all-weather, plus regular cluster Blitzes; their travels so far have taken them to Coolcappa, Knockaderry, Askeaton and An Pairc Amuigh.
Summer camp
The 110 or so children cer-tainly enjoyed last week's well organised and super-vised annual summer camp, despite a good bit of rain which forced a cancellation on Wednes-day, and it ended in glorious sunshine on Friday. The chief coaches for the week were George Fitzgibbon, Denis Molo-ney, Robbie Hammond, Alva Neary and Maria O'Riordan assisted by many coaches and players from the G.A.A. and camogie clubs led by Mike Sammon, Seán Browne, Aaron McCarthy, Maeve Scanlon and Elaine Cunningham; they were all beneficial in teaching the skills and in general enjoying the weekend. We thank all the volunteers who gave up their week to help. County senior goalie Nicky Quaid and county senior footballer James Kelly were there on Thursday and signed every jersey and hurley to be found. Each camper received Newcastle West G.A.A. gear - jersey, socks and togs - and in general the camp was a great success.
With the county
This weekend many of our Coiste na nOg players are in action with county teams in Munster tourna-ments. Top U16s Gavin Riedy and Eoin Murphy are in the Woodlands Adare Tourna-ment which takes place at a number of Limerick venues, while Shane Stack, Andy Brou-der and Darragh McMahon and mentors Pa Keane and Liam 'Oz' Aherne will be in action with the Limerick U15s in Millstreet in a tournament honouring the late great Cork fullback Humphrey Kelleher. The third Limerick team in action, the U14s, go to Dungarvan for the Jim Power Memorial Tourna-ment and have on board four of our successful Feile team, Eoin Sheridan, Thomas Darcy, Seán Murphy and Seán Ivess, plus selector Karl Linehan. We wish our players and mentors and the Limerick teams the best of luck.
Four of our strongest U14s, Cormac Long, Liam McCartan, Brian Hurley and William, could have been in the football team if inclined, but hurling is their priority and they are in the county U14 hurling development squad and hope to make the panel for the Tony Forrestal Tour-nament in Waterford later in the year. Congratulations to Cormac on making the international boxing team.
Senior hurling
Limerick....................3-22
Antrim........................0-12
Many people from the club made the two and a half hour trip to Parnell Park on Saturday to cheer on the boys in green. Our heroes struggled a bit initially but eventually pulled away. Dublin will be tougher opposition in the quarter-final in Thurles but every-one is looking forward to an exciting game. What-ever the outcome, Limerick hurling is back on track after a contentious 2010.
Senior football
Limerick.....................3-13
Offaly........................0-15
Also back on track are the Limerick senior footballers who put the Munster semi-final defeat by Kerry behind them with a good win over Offaly at the Gaelic Grounds on Satur-day, cheered on by many people from our club. Stephen Kelly had an excellent game, his brother James was on the bench and Joe Lee was a selector. The luck of the draw favoured Limerick and they meet Waterford, again at the Gaelic grounds, on Saturday at 7pm with the winner to meet Wexford a week later. Exciting times for Maurice Horan's team and the best of luck to them.
Limerick G.A.A. Development draw
The club had one winner in the draw which took place in the Premier Bar, Ballylanders, on 1st July. We congratulate Stephen Donovan on his €1,000 win. We thank those who have joined the draw through the club. Half the entry fee of €100 goes to the promoting club and the other half to the County Board to fund such aspects of Limerick G.A.A. as the underage teams and Neville Park. The next draw is on Friday 6th August in O'Sullivan's bar in Rathkeale.
Club lottery
Last Monday in Lee's the jackpot was not won. Lucky dips of €40 went to Brendan and Joan Duggan c/o Declan O'Connor, Tom Brouder c/o Seán Roche, Denise Creedon c/o Denis Noonan, Patrick McAuliffe c/o Maurice McAuliffe, and Jimmy Lee c/o lees. This week's jackpot is €16,400 and the draw takes place in Dettori's on Monday 18th July at 11pm. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.
U13 football
Monaleen......................2-3
Newcastle West...........0-2
Our U13 footballers were back in action after a long break last Wednesday in Monaleen. Up against a big strong team and without several regulars, the Newcastle West boys didn't see much of the ball in the first half and were lucky that the city team missed a lot of scoring chances and only led by one point at the break. Newcastle West were much more in the game in the second half with Darragh O'Shea driving forward from midfield and winning a lot of frees. The rain fell for much of the second half and this suited the bigger Monaleen team who got goals at crucial times. Despite this defeat, this team should still make the semi-finals and with training could be conten-ders as there are some talented footballers in this group.
Team: P Guiney, J Griffin, C Daly, L Woulfe, C McMahon, S Hurley, Dwayne McCoy, Darragh O'Shea, C Foley, R Cree-don, D Fox, N McAuliffe, J Nash, D Keenan, Dean McCoy, T Griffin, Laorlan O Murchú.
Feile Corcaigh 2011
As our Feile finalists get back into training for the U14 Football and Hurling Championships they can reflect on an amazing three days in Cork, on and off the field. All who were involved in the adventure have memories that will last a lifetime and will hopefully provide a bond for these fine players as they continue their sporting careers over the next few decades.
From the time the panel gathered at Courtenay Lodge looking so smart in their new gear, throughout three wonderful but tiring days, to the time they got back to Newcastle West, these lads were a credit to their county, their club, their families and partic-ularly to themselves. We must thank Tim Madigan, our driver, for his patience and good humour through-out nearly 15 hours of bus journeys over the three days. The host families in Bantry were so hospitable and looked after the boys so well that we hope to invite the Bantry team to visit Newcastle West later in the year.
Our group games were held in Dunmanway and the club there opened their facilities to the team and supporters, providing refreshments for all.
We could not have com-peted in Feile without the help of our sponsors, to whom we give grateful thanks, and all the U13 and U14 players were involved in fundraising as were their families and we thank them too, especially those not on the panel going to Cork.
Feile skills competition
In our final training session before Feile we held a skills competition to pick a representative to enter the Feile Skills in Cork. After a high quality competition Brian Hurley won by a narrow margin. The skills tested included soloing with left and right foot, accurate fist passing with left and right hand, and kicking points with left and right foot.
The group skills compe-tition between one player from each team in our group took place in Dunmanway and was very close. In fact Brian and the Bantry Blues player were tried first and had to go a second time. Brian's score with his left proved the winner here and he went forward to the Division 2 Final which was held immediately before our semi-final game at Glen Rovers. In fact Brian had to go straight into the pre-game warm-up after his turn at the skills and it was a great boost to the team when the word came through that he had won and qualified for the overall Feile Skills final in Pairc Ui Caoimh the next day.
On finals day it was a major test of character for Brian as the skills final took place immediately after the team had lost to St. Enda's, and he had to leave his team-mates and get ready for his turn. In fact Brian was the only one of the six contestants who was involved in a team final that day. Brian responded to the challenge and was one of only two players to score points with both left and right foot. Unfortunately playing the final beforehand took its toll and he lost on time to the winner. Well done Brian on representing Newcastle West and Limerick football so well.
