Galvin to miss Rules series

Limerick's John Galvin
John Galvin will miss the forthcoming International Rules series after a scan revealed he needs a groin operation.

The Limerick midfielder suffered the injury after landing awkwardly during an International Rules trial in Parnell Park last Friday and will be sidelined for the rest of the year.

"All I know is that it's worse than I thought. I'm waiting to see a surgeon," Galvin told the Irish Sun.

"It's the groin. They said the tendon is coming off the bone. But in terms of what it all means, I have yet to be told in layman's term. I was tackled and when I hit the ground I heard a pop and I was in absolute agony.

"It was an accident and it's unfortunate. That's the way it goes. It will have me laid up for a while. I won't see sport this side of Christmas anyway. I will worry about next year now and try to get it right. It won't put me off going back anyway," added Galvin, who is also an accomplished basketball player.

Ireland manager Anthony Tohill, who is working with a provisional panel of 45, will hold further trials at Croke Park and DCU over the next two days ahead of the two Tests against Australia in Limerick and Croke Park next month.
