05 July 2010

News

Don't forget the annual Family Fun Day next Sunday, July 11th, at the club ground - a great day is expected with a barbeque, bouncy castles, shop, Irish coffee tent, games, poc fada, rounders, tug o' war and lots more. Screens will be installed on the day to allow patrons to view the Munster Hurling Final between Cork and Waterford.

16 Football Championship Division 2
Askeaton/Ballysteen 0-02 Killulta Gaels 2-09.

The Killulta Under-16 footballers were back in action on Saturday June 26th after the
5 week exam break. Their opponents were neighbours Askeaton/Ballysteen
with the match played on a bright but blustery afternoon in Askeaton.
Killulta started very strongly and scored a goal and three points within
the opening four minutes: Paudie Walsh, operating at full forward, scoring
1-2 and Tony McCarthy with a point. Our opponents at this point resorted
to a blanket defence and this, coupled with some poor shooting, meant we
did not score again until the 21st minute when Jack O'Keeffe pointed in
reply to Askeaton/Ballysteen's first point of the game in the 20th minute.
A converted 45 from Barry O'Connell and a point from Darragh Walsh in
the last couple of minutes of this half gave us a half time lead of 8
points, 1-6 to 0-1.

Darragh Walsh opened the scoring for us in the first minute of the
second half but playing against a stiff breeze we found scores hard to
come by for the rest of this half. Two points for substitute Martin
Nunan and a goal from Tony McCarthy were our lot to leave the final
score 2-9 to 0-2 in our favour. All 20 players used made a significant contribution to this win which
leaves the battle for a place on the starting 15 wide open.

Team: Paul Clarke, Kevin O'Connell, Micheal Keating, Dean Corrigan,
Niall Maher, Ciaran O'Brien, Gregory Delap, Tony McCarthy(1-1), Darragh
Walsh(0-2), David Holland, Barry O'Connell(0-1), Eoin Cuddihy, Jack
O'Keeffe(0-1), Paudie Walsh(1-2), Paul Larkin.
Sub used: Martin Nunan(0-2), Colm O'Neill, Craig Mills, Evan Maher,
Tom O'Shea.

U16 Hurling All-County League
Killulta Gaels 3-14 Murroe Boher 2-5

Murroe/Boher were visitors to Kildimo on Monday evening last for Round 5
of the All-County League. This was a top of the table clash with both
sides unbeaten in their previous 4 fixtures.

Murroe/Boher were first on the scoreboard with a point from play but
this was followed by 3 points in quick succession 2 from Darragh Walsh
and one from Jack O'Keeffe. The side from the east then struck back with
an unanswered goal and point. A point from Barry O'Connell kept Killulta
in touch before Murroe/Boher struck another point to restore a 2 point
lead. With 4 minutes to go to half-time Jack O'Keeffe struck 2 points in
quick succession and it was level for the second time in the match. In
the final minute of the half Murroe and then Barry O'Connell for
Killulta scored a point apiece so it remained level at 0-7 to 1-4 at the
break. It was a very entertaining first half and there was some quality
hurling on display from both sides.

Killulta redoubled their efforts in the second half and a few positional
switches seemed to make a difference. Murroe were first to attack but
narrowly missed a scoring chance. Killulta raced down the field and Eoin
Cuddihy popped the sliotar over the bar. Suddenly Killulta seemed to
have found a rhythm and in the following 3 minutes of pressure play Barry
O'Connell scored 2 points and finally a blistering goal. Tom O'Shea who
had come on as a substitute delivered a fine goal within 2 minutes of
his arrival. A few minutes later we saw the move of the match. Paul
Clarke made a long clearance from his goalmouth to Jack O'Keeffe, who
sent it directly to Martin Nunan who drove it over the bar - from one
end of the field to the other in less than ten seconds and without the
sliotar touching the ground. Two minutes later Mark Daly struck for
another goal to give Killulta a decent cushion and allow further
substitutions. In the final quarter Darragh Walsh and Martin Nunan both
had points before Murroe/Boher hit a quick goal and a point. Barry
O'Connell added a final point in the last minute to close out a very
decent performance by the team.
In a game like this one it would be difficult and indeed unfair to pick
out individual performances. The work-rate, skill and commitment from
all who played was top-notch and on the night we also had the luxury of
a full bench to use. A special mention however for Shane Gloster our
stand-in goalkeeper on the night who gave an assured performance.

Team and Scorers: Shane Gloster, Dean Corrigan, Paul Clarke, Evan
McCarthy, Darragh Walsh(0-3), Ciarán O'Brien, Kevin O'Connell, Barry
O'Connell(1-5), Tony McCarthy, Eoin Cuddihy(0-1), Martin Nunan(0-2),
Niall Maher, Jack O'Keeffe(0-3), Micheál Keating, Mark Daly(1-0), Tom
O'Shea(1-0), Ross Mann, David Holland, Evan Maher, Paul Larkin, Craig Mills.

U 12 Girls Football Novice Shield Final
Killulta Gaels 5-8 Gerald Griffins 3-3

Our u12 played Gerald Griffins in an exciting game of 2 halves in Knockaderry on Thursday, June 24th. Thanks to the club for the use of the pitch which was in excellent condition.
We started well by scoring the opening well taken point by Regina Griffin but Griffins were quick to respond by also putting a point on the board, but within minutes Kate O Shaughnessy scored a cracking goal, we went on only to score 3 more points by Jessie, Grace and another by Regina ,despite gallant efforts by the girls we were unable stop Gerald Griffins who at have time looked like they had the game in the bag as they were 5 points up at 1-4 to 3-3 but they had not counted on the heart of this team who had won all but one game this year. They came out fighting in second half with Jessie scoring a goal to settle us down followed by a goal from Regina and then a she also scored a point, Griffins had no answer for us and Grace scored another cracking goal .Ciara Downes who had a collision with the goal posts went on to scored a fine point from a free ,Jessie went on to score the final goal of the match and Regina Griffin went on to finish the game as it she had started with another fine point. Even though griffins did not score in the second half this was a due to the hard work of our backs Chloe who played a great match for her first match this year due to breaking her arm, Meara, Sophie and the many saves by our goalie Laura, but each and every girl has in this team has played their part in winning this shield even though there was a few missing on the night due to holidays: Sarah Clancy, Mairead Ryan and Emily Ryan. Jessie Nash, as captain, accepted the trophy for Dawn O Shaughnessy from the county board and wished Gerald Griffins all the best and thanked parents and management.
All the girls have improved so much and once more we would like to thank all parents for the support through the year and we have much hope for next year
