Patrickswell club notes

November 05, 2018

MINOR HURLERS:

Patrickswell were defeated in the Minor County Final against a strong Garryspillane team at the Gaelic Grounds.  Jason Gillane gave Patrickswell a dream start when he scored a rampaging goal after just fifty seconds.  The early shock seemed to rattle Garryspillane, but they recovered with two consecutive points to narrow the deficit.  Josh Considine’s point put the ‘Well ahead by 1-1 to 0-2, but the Bouncers drew level with another pair of points.  After fifteen minutes of play, the scoreboard was tied at 1-1 to 0-4.  Calvin Carroll and Adam Carrig added fresh points to give Patrickswell another two-point lead; however the game turned sharply when Garryspillane struck a goal and two points to hit the front after 25 minutes.  The ‘Well were now trailing by 1-6 to 1-3.  The last few minutes of the first half were closely fought as Calvin Carroll’s point was immediately cancelled out.  When the referee blew his whistle for half-time, we were still in contention at 1-7 to 1-4 behind.

The opening score of the second half was a point from Cormac Kerins.  As the ‘Well tried to overhaul the margin, Garryspillane shut the door with two consecutive points.  The scoreline was 1-9 to 1-5 before Calvin Carroll produced two points to trim the arrears to 1-9 to 1-7.  The spectators were on the edge of their seats as every ball became fiercely contested.  Unfortunately for John O’Donnell’s boys, Garryspillane produced three straight points to build a robust five-point lead at 1-12 to 1-7.  The clock was running down at this stage.  Despite two more points from Calvin Carroll, the Bouncers responded in kind.  The full sixty minutes had been played and Garryspillane led by 1-14 to 1-9.  The linesman indicated three minutes of injury time and the ‘Well dropped in short balls to force a goal.  Our opponents held firm and the sole reward was a point from Jason Gillane.  At the final whistle, Garryspillane were the 1-14 to 1-10 victors.  Hard luck to the players and management for coming so close during an excellent season.

HURLER OF THE YEAR:

Congratulations to Cian Lynch, who was awarded GAA Hurler of the Year at the Convention Centre in Dublin.  The award was richly deserved for his marvellous contribution to Limerick’s All-Ireland campaign.  In addition, Cian scooped an All Star place.
LEONARD ENRIGHT R.I.P.:

The club were saddened to learn of the death of Patrickswell and Limerick hurler Leonard Enright.  Leonard was a multiple All Star winner and got inducted to the GAA Hall of Fame in 2018.  He was also a well-respected Councillor. Our sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace.
