Table Quiz

Glin GAA will be holding their next fundraising table quiz in Conway's this Friday night, February 16th at 9.30pm. There will be a raffle and spot prizes on the night and all are welcome.

Cúl Camps

Glin/Gerald Griffin's Cúl Camp will take place in Glin's GAA pitch this summer from July 30th to August 3rd. Places can be booked online from early March.

County League Fixtures

The County Board have released the provisional fixture list for this year's County League. First up is Galtee Gaels at home on the first weekend of March. This will be followed by games against Father Casey's, Pallasgreen, Castlemahon, Bruff, Kilteely-Dromkeen and Mungret. After a good league campaign last year where we finished second to winners Claughan by two points, there are some interesting contests to look forward to in March, May and June.

Club Lotto

Many club volunteers have been working diligently behind the scenes to get our new Club Lotto up and running for March. Further details regarding the launch night will be outlined in these notes over the next few weeks. Glin GAA club would like to express their sincere appreciation to Tom Moore of 'Janus Signs and Printing' for all his help and support in developing our lotto.

Junior B

After a year's absence, we will be fielding a Junior B team for the 2018 season with Wicklow exile Christy Hanlon and Glin native Pádraig Horan forming the management team. Anyone interested in playing should let the lads know, send us a message on Facebook or keep an eye on these notes for upcoming fixtures.

Glin GAA History

We hope that over the last eight weeks, readers have gained an insight into important matches, and key personalities and players that have contributed greatly to our rich sporting history in Glin. We are constantly trying to enhance our club archive and feedback is very welcome. It has been our aim to cover all decades of Glin football in these look back segments over the past two months. Glin won a County Junior title in 1958 and a West Junior Finals in 1964 and 1967 but in The last entry in this Look Back segment concerns the Glin Junior team from '64 and their great victory over Castlemahon in the 1964 West semi-final.  

Glin 4-1 Castlemahon 1-4

Scoring a rather late but convincing win over Castlemahon at Askeaton on Sunday, a resurgent Glin fifteen have qualified for the West Limerick Junior Football final in which they with meet Kilcolman at Rathkeale on Sunday.

Although admittedly the better of the two teams, the Shannonsiders had to fight every inch of the way and when the scores were level entering into the last quarter, it looked for a time as if the honours might well go to the Upper Deel parish, which contained no less than six Quaid cousins on the field. Indeed, it was still anyone's game up to the fiftieth minute, when Glin struck for a goal what was hotly disputed by their rivals. This score, which was followed by lengthy argument and interruption, was the end of the road as far as Castlemahon were concerned and was compounded just before the final whistle when Glin added a further goal to their winning tally. The game had been very exciting for long spells, with sustained activity around the goalmouth at both ends, however, Glin were the more polished combination and were fully deserving of their hard-earned win.

The game itself was an exceptionally good one, with plenty of spills and thrills for the large gathering of fans. Despite the close marking and liberal number of minor infringements, the quality of kicking and fielding was of a very high standard and there were a number of fine individual performances. Not least of those was Seán Finn in the Glin net. Moss Meade was a tower of strength in the last line of the Shannonside defence, where he was ably assisted by Michael Adams and Dan Culhane. Jimmy Reidy and Pat J. Fitzgerald were always very much in the picture at midfield, while in the attack, the Glin scores came from Mick Dillane, Timmy O'Connor and Tim Healy. Jim and Jack Quaid, former Limerick hurling stars, were the driving force behind the gallant Castlemahon effort.

Glin set the pace in the opening minutes and had three wides before Mick Dillane caught the Castlemahon defence off the mark with a goal for the opening score of the game.  Castlemahon then had a number of attacks but were left frustrated by the fine goalkeeping of Seán Finn. Quaid and Moyneaux opened Castlemahon's account with two points before Timmy O'Connor finished off a determined Glin offensive with a rasping shot to the net.  Castlemahon retaliated with two points. Tim Healy hit back with a point with the winners. Just before half time, Glin struck another goal to leave the score 2-1 to 0-2 to the Magpies.

Shortly after the restart, it was Castlemahon who scored a fine goal which brought the scores level.  It came as a result of hectic goalmouth scramble, where Whelan cut in to force the ball past Seán Finn. The fat was now in the fire as a rejuvenated Castlemahon team strove to press home their advantage. It was at this vital time, that Finn, Moss Meade, Dan Culhane and Mick Dillane proved their worth. Glin missed number of further scoring opportunities, but eventually Timmy O'Connor made the breakthrough striking a vital goal to the back of the Castlemahon net. This was followed up in the final moments of the game with another Glin goal by Tim Healy. The Shannonsiders emerged victorious, 4-1 to 1-4.

Footnote: Glin went on to defeat Kilcolman by eight points, 3-4 to 1-2, in the West Final with Timmy O'Connor, Tim Healy and Jotty Culhane the scorers.
