Hayden, Tony

March 08, 2011
Mention of Leitrim reminds me that one of their great players of the 1950s, Tony Hayden, died last weekend.
Tony was left-half back on the great Leitrim team that contested four Connacht finals in a row against Galway in 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. I mentioned that team in this column a few weeks ago after an Irish emigrant had sent me a copy of the match programme for the Leitrim v Roscommon game.
Tony was a fine wingback and will always be remembered by Leitrim followers whenever that team is mentioned. Tony worked with the ESB in Sligo and I got known him very well during my years there.
He was a quiet, unassuming gentleman who was a great family and community man. He was married to Nina McSharry, sister of Ray McSharry, and had three children, Cathal, Ciara and Darragh. His funeral took place in Sligo on Monday. May he rest in peace.
