Sonny Canning RIP

It was with great sadness we heard about the death of Sonny Canning Drumshambo North last week. A great footballer for Aughavas in the forties & Fifties, he won four senior championships with Aughavas in 1949, 52,54 & 55. An outstanding full-back with a great kick out, he was said to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, full-backs Aughavas ever had. His remains, draped with the number 3 Aughavas jersey, were received at Aughavas church with a guard of honour by past & present players. Sonny was also a life president of the club and his two grandchildren Conor & Genevieve played with Aughavas under 10 team against Cloone the previous Sunday and at this early stage showing great potential and hopefully another Sonny in the years to come. To his wife Mary, son Thomas, daughters Mary & Lily, grandchildren, relatives friends & neighbours we extend our deepest sympathy. A dheis de go raibh anam di
