Fitzpatrick, Paddy

The Late Paddy Fitzpatrick The untimely death of Paddy Fitzpatrick Coolderry, Ballacolla on Monday September 8, brought great sadness throughout the south of the county where Paddy was well known and liked by so many people. Paddy had been in failing health for sometime, yet his death at a early age has cast gloom over the area. Paddy for many years was an employee of Glanbia, then, known as Avonmore the their branch in Spink. He retired only two years ago. Spink creamery was like all such places a wonderful meeting place for the sporting and farming fraternity. On Monday mornings games would be replayed over and over and Paddy was always regarded as a judge of all matters sporting. Paddy's first love was hurling but liked nothing better than a game of cards, or a flutter on the "nags". He could be seen at Bingo on three or four nights a week. In 1957 he lined out in goal when St. Caince's won their first ever intermediate hurling title defeating Rathdowney. Six years later he lined out in the number nine jersey in the first only senior final against Carmross and despite his best efforts there was to be no reward at the final whistle. A week later Paddy made his inter county debut when he lined out in goal for Laois in the N.H. L where he continued until his retirement. Paddy Fitzpatrick was a wonderful sportsman and his annual trip to Tramore always coincided with the local race meeting in mid August. This year despite his falling health Paddy made the Annual Pilgrimage. He will be missed in the bookies, bingo halls, and wherever a game of cards was played. His remains were removed to Ballacolla Church and funeral took place after 11am Mass in St. Fergal's Church. He is regretted by his adoring wife, Nora (nee Larkin) of Ballyroan, sons and daughters, John Eamon, Padraig, Marion, Fiona, brothers Jim, Christy (Twin) John, Michael, sisters Doris, and Mai, uncle, grandchildren. Sons-in-law Matthew and Martin, daughter-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law Irene, brothers and sisters and a large circle of sporting friends. Go nia dia trocaire ar a ainm.
