Costigan, Donal

The late Donal Costigan The recent sudden death of Portlaoise native Donal Costigan shocked his family, relatives and many friends. He was taken ill at his Portmarnock home in the early hours of Saturday October 2 and died a short time later in Beaumont Hospital. His only sister Rita died in April of this year. Donal must have been one of the best supporters of the Laois Senior and under age teams in the country, rarely missed any of their games. One of his happiest memories in recent years apart from the All-Ireland success of the minors was the Seniors winning the Leinster last year. He had most if not all of the programmes in both hurling and football for the last fifty years, he rarely missed "Croker" on the big day. Donal was very interested in Soccer and was a committee member of Finn Harps Soccer club during his time as a Customs Officer in Lifford. He regularly attended Old Trafford for Manchester United's home games as well as other countries for their European matches. He also supported the national soccer team and again travelled out of the country to see them play in European and World Cup games. Donal had a great interest in Sport Quizs and participated in Know Your Sport on R.T.E. a few years ago. He was a committee member of the Civil Service Sports Club in Santry and was proud of his contribution to this magnificent centre. He was also a member of Laois Association in Dublin. Donal was always happy to return to Portlaoise and see his native town play and meet his many friends and neighbours during these visits. If they were sportsmen from this or past times it was all the better. He was also proud his life long membership of the Pioneer Abstinence Association. Courtesy of the Leinster Express October 2004
