Conroy, Brendan

October 31, 2004
The Late Brendan Conroy LAOIS GAA and the Clonad and Heath clubs in particular were shocked to hear of the sudden death of a former player and official, Brendan Conroy. Brendan died suddenly while out exercising his dog on Monday. He helped The Heath win three in a row senior football titles from 1960 to 1962 and was also on the Clonad team of 1962 which won the Laois SHC title, defeating Borris-in-Ossory in the final. Brendan was one of a family of seven boys and two girls - Tony, Jack, George, Joe, Peter, Louis, Marie, Gannon and Vera Donogue. When he retired from playing he was a long time official of the club. In the '62 SHC decider, six of the brothers were on the starting line up and Clonad won 1-8 to 0-5. For many years Brendan was employed in the nearby Cul na Mona factory until he retired some years ago. A true Clonad and Heath man all his life it was fitting that he should die close to the Clonad GAA grounds in Meelick. Brendan had been ill for some years yet remained active right up until his untimely death. His death is mourned by his wife Catherine, sons David, Jack, Brendan, Paul and Victor and his daughter Daphne; family and friends. His son Sylvester passed away in recent years due to illness.
