The Late Patrick Maher Patrick Maher, who died in Beaumont Hospital was a founder member and President of the Laois Association in Dublin. He was 82. A member of a family of eight and a son of John and Ann Maher (nee Fitzpatrick), he was from Rathleague, Portlaoise. Patrick was a player and activist with the Rathleague-based Rovers' GAA Club that achieved great success in the 1940s and early '50s. A courteous and kindly man, he spent most of his working life in the civil service, first with the then Dept of Posts and Telegraphs, and then with the Dept of the Environment. An O'Moore County man through and through, his work with the Laois Association earned him a Leinster Express Hall of Fame Award last year. Patrick's remains were removed from Beaumont Hospital to SS Peter and Paul's Church, Portlaoise. Following 12 noon Mass the funeral took place in the New Cemetery. Mourning him are his wife Maureen sons, John and Brendan, brothers Paul and Peter, sister Gretty, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. "Laois Association Chairperson Rita Delaney in a tribute to Patrick Maher, noted that he was involved in the organisation for many years. She added: "He contributed enormously to the Associations many successes and was enthusiastically involved in its re-launch in 2000.
