Gorman, Liam

The Late Liam Gorman The death of Liam Gorman of Errill, brings to three the number of Laois Hurlers of 1949 to have passed away this year. Earlier this year the death took place of captain Paddy Rustichzko Then last month Liam White of Borris-in-Ossory passed away, then Liam Gorman passed away after a short illness. Liam, a fine tall hurler, was one of Errill's finest, who along with Jimmy Murphy flew the Errill flat at county level, both played major roles in bringing the O'Keefe Cup to Errill on the one and only occasion in 1952. Jimmy Murray was team captain both were on the teams beaten by Clonad in 1950 and '54. Liam was a farmer all his life and a very shrewd judge of stock, his lands were located at a place called Gorman's Cross. Until his dying day Liam followed Laois and Errill teams through thick and thin his greatest thrill in recent years was when Errill finally returned to Senior ranks in 1981 and a year later appeared in their first Senior Final since 1954 only to lose narrowly to Portlaoise and four years later saw perhaps the best Errill team of his time reach another final defeating Portlaoise in the semi-final, but in a thriller failed to Camross. Liam took fierce pride in the progress of his three nephews Liam, John and Paul Delaney who formed the backbone of that great Errill team. His remains were removed to Errill Church and a huge congregation turned out to bade farewell to a wonderful sportsman and a dedicated Errill man, who was held in high esteem where ever hurling was discussed. He is mourned by his brothers John and Bro Tom. Sisters Mary Delaney and Bridie Keys, sister-in-law, Maisie, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews as well as a huge circle of friends, farming and sporting. May he rest in peace.
