A link to the last Laois team to claim Leinster SHC honours in 1949 has been broken with the passing of former Fianna Fail Minister Patrick 'Paddy' Lalor at the age of 90.

A talented dual player with his native Abbeyleix, Paddy was widely regarded as one of the the O'Moore County's most skilful hurlers ever.

This was recognised with his selection on the Laois Hurling Team of the Millennium in 1999.

He also made a lasting impression on the political front and served as a TD for Laois/Offaly from 1961 to 1981.

During that period, he occupied the roles of Minister for Post and Telegraphs and Minister for Industry.

Mr Lalor was also chief whip in the 1977-79 government under late Taoiseach Jack Lynch before being elected to the European Parliament. He served as an MEP for Leinster until 1994.

In a tribute, Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin said: "Paddy had a very distinguished political career and represented the people of Laois /Offaly with great pride.

"He was a great GAA supporter and played for the Laois hurling team in 1949."
