Delaney, Sadie

October 29, 2013
The death took place at Portlaoise Hospital on Saturday October 19 of Mrs Sadie Delaney of Camross Village. Sadie was pre-deceased by her husband Denis nine years ago and celebrated her 87th birthday earlier this year. Born on August 4, 1926, she was one of five children and lost her mother at the age of eight and her and her three sisters were reared by family and friends. Sadie married Denis Delaney of Marymount, Camross in 1947 and their oldest son Michael was born in 1949 and they had three more boys and two girls.
Denis died in November of 2003. They lived in Johnsboro for a short while before moving to live in Camross Village. Sadie was involved in many organisations in the parish including Muintir Na Tire, ICA, Legion of Mary and Tidy Towns.
Sadie was a keen follower of Camross GAA and for many years catered for the team when they were preparing for county finals. In recent years she looked after the parish church and immersed herself in the over sixties group in the parish and was active in ensuring that the rural transport scheme was supported at all times.
Sadie had a passion for cards and seldom missed a whist drive within twenty miles of home and enjoyed bingo when it was played in the Parish Hall. In May of 1972 she supplied the weekly Camross notes to the Leinster Express and continued to do until her illness in late September. Sadie took ill six weeks ago and was a patient at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise until her passing on Saturday morning. Huge crowds travelled to pay their respects over three days and having reposed at her residence her remains were removed to St Fergals Church, Camross on Monday evening and on Tuesday morning her youngest son Fr Martin Delaney celebrated her requiem mass and he was joined by 40 other clergymen including Arch Deacon Murray of Rathdowney.
Sadie was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery in the family plot. Chief mourners are her sons Michael, Pat, Brendan and Fr Martin, daughters Mona and Vera sister Lily Sheeran Borris-in-Ossory, grand children, great grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, relatives and a large circle of friends. May she rest in peace.
