Laois may have to plan without midfielder Brendan Quigley for some time.
The Timahoe midfielder informed Laois manager Justin McNulty that he was departing the squad and heading to New York.
Many believed it was just for the summer, but the former Aussie Rules recruit revealed to the Leinster Express that he was going to seek full time employment out there.
"I have no work, I haven't worked since Christmas and lads can set you up with a good job over there," said Quigley. "I'll be gone for a year anyway, or until things pick up back here."
