Rankin, Richard A

Atchelle was his middle name and it was by this name that most, if not all, people knew him. And probably the majority of the old stock in Portlaoise and beyond did know him. And respect him. They and his family are now mourning him. He died on Monday, August 15, aged 72, he had been unwell for some time.

He fought his illness courageously and with fortitude. Indeed on the day before his death, he watched the Tipperary/Dublin All Ireland hurling semi-final. A great hurling fan, he had played the sport himself as a minor for Portlaoise. Cork's fortunes he especially followed. His mother was from the Rebel County.
Annbrook House, a striking residence visible from James Fintan Lalor Avenue, was Atchelle Rankin's home. He died in nearby Annbrook Lodge, the home of his brother Des Rankin and his wife Maureen.

The youngest son of Joe and Ann Rankin, who resided at Dublin Road, Portlaoise, Atchelle was a member of a five-strong family of whom Des is the sole survivor. Highly regarded, the Rankins established an undertaking business in 1956. Rankin Brothers, as it was called, involved Noel, Atchelle and Des and traded successfully for 46 years.

Atchelle also excelled as a builder. His many interests included music and dancing. He was an early member of St Josephs Accordion Band which was formed in 1957. Of Mountrath Golf Club, took he was a member and was its Captain in 1984. His enjoyment of travel took him to many parts of the world. Blessed with intelligence and a marvellous memory, he could converse on a variety of subjects, including local history, and his views were set on a solid foundation of common sense.
On Wednesday August 17, remains were removed from Annbrook Lodge to SS Peter and Paul's Church. Following 10am mass, the funeral took place to SS Peter and Paul's Cemetery. Mountrath Golf Club members formed a guard of honour and the large cortege attested to the esteem in which Atchelle was held.

Surviving him are his brother Des, sister-in-law Maureen, nieces Mary and Anne, special friend Ann Dunne, cousins, relatives and friends.
