Ring, Agnes

July 06, 2011
Her family and many friends are mourning the loss of Agnes Ring (nee Scully), Tunduff, Abbeyleix, who died in the Regional Hospital, Tullamore on Friday May 27. Aged 74, she had been ill for a short time.

A woman of many talents and accomplishments was she - mother, singer, gardener, cook, card player, traveller. With her husband John, who predeceased her by a few years, she could be the life and soul of any company. Indeed, of such high quality was her singing, that she won many competitions, including one judged by none less than the legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne.

Agnes belonged to the real old stock of Portlaoise, reared on New Road, and a daughter of Christy and Ages Scully. She was a Panto girl, one of the bevy of beauties who in the 1950s starred in the Irish Worsted Mills' Pantomimes. She began working in 'the factory,' as it was called colloquially, when she was only 16.

She was of striking appearance, tall and attractive, and she was invariably well-groomed. Throughout her life she had a great dress-sense.

It was Abbeyleix's gain when Agnes moved to Tunduff. She had a word for everyone, was a great neighbour, and it is believed that she was the first woman to join the local GAA Club.

Following requiem mass in Holy rosary Church, Abbeyleix, on Saturday May 28, the funeral took place to the adjoining cemetery. Surviving Agnes are her children Marcella, Tom, Ann Marie, Lorchan, Mark and Emma, sisters Eillie and Annie, brother Tim, grandchildren, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, cousins, relatives and friends.
