Lyons, Jimmy

February 11, 2009
The late Jimmy Lyons and Ger Hoey Laois GAA was in mourning in the last week after the deaths of former Cuddagh, Camross and Laois hurler Jimmy Lyons . Lyons died on Monday morning, and is survived by his wife Peggy, sons John and Seamus and daughters Letitia, Lenora, Lourda and Dolores. Lyons enjoyed a hugely successful playing career with Cuddagh, Camross and Laois, before going on to act as a selector with Laois under Georgie Leahy. Lyons began his playing career with Cuddagh, winning an Intermediate title with them in 1956, before going on to play in two senior finals with them in 1959 and 1961, losing both times. When Cuddagh disbanded in the early '60s, he transferred to Camross, where he enjoyed his most successful spell of his playing career. He was midfield on the Camross team which won five titles in a row from 1965 to '69, before picking up further senior medals in '71 and '73 when he was introduced as a sub and turned the game in Camross' favour. With Laois, he won National League medals in '59, '60 and '65 as a player, before then coming on board as a selector with Georgie Leahy during that successful period for Laois hurling. At club level, he was also part of the backroom team with Fr Sean Collier which guided Camross to the Leinster title in 1976. - Courtesy of The Leinster Express, 11th Feburary 2009
