Laois manager Eamonn Kelly admits that it is difficult to explain the season they are having.

A heavy defeat to Carlow last weekend has ended Laois' hopes of reaching the final of the Joe McDonagh Cup and indeed a defeat to Meath this weekend will see them head for the Christy Ring Cup next year.

That would be nothing short of a disaster for a county that had high hopes of reaching the decider of the inaugural second tier hurling championship.

"It's disappointing, it's very difficult to figure it out," Kelly told the Leinster Express. "We even played a challenge game last week for a lot of the guys that are on the fringes of the panel, and they were all chomping at the bit.

"We thought we were in great form coming into it, it's quite frustrating not to see it. It's disappointing to lose, but it's worse altogether when you don't perform to your potential, and that's the part of it that's frustrating."
