Cavan face Donegal in Ulster decider
May 16, 2013
Cavan minor ladies go into Saturday's Ulster final as major underdogs but that is not worrying manager Anthony Brady who knows exactly what his team are capable of when they play to their potential. Cavan's performances en route to the final have been somewhat indifferent with a draw, a loss and a win being their results to date. They began their campaign with a hard fought draw away to last year's Ulster champions in Tyrone on a very wet and windy day. With both sides exchanging the lead a number of times throughout, a draw was probably the fairest result on the day.
They then welcomed Donegal to Kingspan Breffni Park knowing a victory would secure their place in the final, however were defeated by 4-11 to 1-11. Donegal managed to get goals at crucial times in the game and were fully deserving of their victory. This result meant that the Breffni girls would have to play Tyrone again for a place in the final. This game was played in Fermanagh on Saturday week last and with Cavan leading from start to finish, they never looked like losing and ran out 7-8 to 4-7 victors to book their Ulster final spot against Donegal.
Having won the Ulster B title last year, it is a great achievement for the girls to reach the final in their first year back up in the top tier of minor football and with 11 players remaining from the team that started last year's Ulster final and a further 11 coming into the squad from last year's U-16 All Ireland winning team, experience or nerves should not be an issue. It has also been a very successful year on the schools front for most of the girls on the panel with St. Louis Carrick winning an U-16 B Ulster title, Loreto Cavan winning an U-16 C Ulster title and Virginia College winning an U-19 Ulster Title. Cavan also had three girls represented at the interprovincial schools competition with Aoibhin Kiernan and Cavan captain Naomi Smith pulling on the Ulster jersey while Aisling Sheridan was selected for the Leinster Squad.
With huge success at underage level for Cavan in 2012, another Ulster final appearance continues to highlight the tremendous work being done at these grades in recent years. The team will be hoping for a large crowd of supporters to cheer on the girls and act as the 16th player. The final is fixed for Saturday at 12.30pm the venue is Kildallon GAA grounds in Ballyconnell at 1pm.
