Ronan, Eamon

The death occurred on August 27 of Eamon Ronan, 57 Marymount, Ferrybank and formerly of New Aglish, Carrigeen. A native of Cuffesgrange, he was educated at St Kieran's College, Kilkenny and played on the college hurling team. He then joined CIE as a Clerical Officer, a position he retained until taking early retirement some years ago. He was Secretary of the Ossory branch of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association and led an annual overnight pilgrimage to Knock for members of the south Kilkenny parishes. Each year he gave a talk on the association to the confirmation classes in local schools. he was a member of the Mooncoin Moondharrig Players, and also the Slieverue Drama Group, and took part in many of their productions. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Eamon of Kildalton, Piltown; daughters Bernie Dempsey, Carrigeen; Maria Roana, Ferrybank and Finola Lea, Stratford-upon-Avon. He was brother of Billy, Avondale Nursing Home, Callan; Pierce, London and deceased brothers and sisters, Kit, Mick, Tom, Fr Patrick, Columban Missionaries, Philippines and Sr Maura, Little Company of Mary London. The huge attendance at his funeral was testament to the popularity he enjoyed and the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. A true gentleman, he will be sadly missed.
