Sherwood, Mick

September 30, 2007
The death of Mick Sherwood, Maryville at the District Hospital has caused great sadness across the county. For seven decades he has been part and parcel of life on Deenside and was involved in a truly unique manner with all sports. As a young man he played basketball winning numerous honours with both club and county. Probably his proudest moment arrived when he captained Kilkenny Minors to an All-Ireland Title win over Dublin in Kerry. Indeed it was great to see so many of his former colleagues attend the funeral. He also found time to hurl with Erins Own, kick football with Railyard and play soccer with Deen Rovers. He went on to win a Carlow League, Shield, Top four medal with Deen Rovers as well as appearing in two McCalmont Cup finals in Kilkenny. The mister versatile was also a prominent member of the CYMS and represented Comer in numerous Diocesan Billiards and Snooker Competitions. Usually he played the anchor role where he was always as cool as a cucumber proving so often that the best wine was kept till last. Almost all of his working career was spent with the local Kelly construction firm. Over the years he was involved in several building projects and spent many a day carrying out maintenance work on the Church of the Immaculate Conception from where he lived in the shadow of all of his days. Just like his life Mick was always tidy whether the call came from work, sport or neighbours. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and if Mick Sherwood could not do a good turn for you then he certainly would not do a bad one. As a person he was kind natured and generous of his time and liked nothing more than to amble with his dog together with his friend Mick Dunphy. As a neighbour he was second to none. He will be fondly remembered in the Villa for his kindness especially to the children and this kindness was reciprocated to him in turn by Geraldine and the family. His uniqueness in sporting circles was reflected in a moving guard of honour comprising of Deen Celtic FC and Erins Own GAA Club. Burial was in the Parish Cemetery after Requiem mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Fr Tom Corcoran C.C. assisted by Mgr. Michael Ryan PP. He is survived by his brothers Bill, Jim; sisters Rosie, Pauline, Peig, Mary (England), nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Courtesy of the Carlow Nationalist. September 2007
